ITS asks students to change passwords after breach
Information Technology Services (ITS) requested that all students change their UNET passwords during the February break following a server breach on Feb. 21 that may have revealed student login information to hackers, according to a letter from Chief Information Officer Perry Hanson on the ITS Web site.According to ITS Senior Systems Administrator Rich Graves, 95 percent of students changed their passwords within a day of the announcement of the server breach, and few unchanged passwords still linger.
Commenting on the speed of student response, Graves said, "It was really kind of shocking because people just did it."
"In earlier email messages I have shared with you my dismay at the relentless dastardly attacks on our systems and networks," Hanson said.
Hanson said that an unrestricted ITS administrator password was cracked, allowing the intruders to access many campus computers.
"Sadly, these types of attacks are unlikely to diminish," Hanson said. "It is vital that each of us takes the time to secure our computers ever more carefully."
Graves said that he could not discuss the nature of the attack because it is still under investigation. The ITS Web page also said that until further notice, remote desktop connections (RDC) from off campus are being refused.
