Assistant Dean of Student Life Alwina Bennett perfectly summed up the women's soccer team's two victories this week following a 4-1 win over Babson College with a declaration that "a win is a win." But had the Judges not been playing average teams, the results may have been different.Babson was the Judges' first victim of the week in Tuesday's home opener.

The scoring began in the 13th minute when a Babson defender put Brandeis up 1-0 when she mistakenly scored on her own goal while trying to clear a well-played ball sent in by Melissa Gordon '07. Gordon slipped a cross pass into the box to a streaking Lauren Gregor '06 who was unable to get a foot on it, but the trailing Babson defender redirected it into the net for the first goal of the game.

After a deluge of shots, Amy King '08 was finally able to increase the lead with her first collegiate goal in the 40th minute. Tzlil Castel '08 registered the assist as King fired a shot over the keeper's head and into the net, sending the Judges into the break with a commanding 2-0 lead.

"Amy is a hustler; she never stops," coach Denise Dallamora said. "It was a very well-played ball from Tzlil and a powerful shot."

The Judges were halfway home, but the Beavers had not yet gotten started. Babson began the second half strongly, but only managed to convert one of its shots for its lone goal of the game. The ball was deflected off the post past Brandeis goalkeeper Natasha Pieciak '06 for what would be the only goal scored on the Judges so far this season.

Brandeis waited until the last few minutes of the game to finish its scoring. With only five minutes remaining in the second half, Lisa Kaplin '07 received a pass from Gregor and slotted it past the goalie for wht Dallamora called "a very nice goal."

It was Kaplin's second goal of the season and Brandeis' third of the game. Gordon was later rewarded for her good passing game with a goal right before the whistle, rounding out the scoring for the Judges.

"Babson never gave up," Dallamora said. "They scored on a play that was not very well defended, but they hustled the whole time."

The women traveled to Worcester on Saturday to take on Clark University. Here, the team had to quickly acclimate itself to Clark's artificial playing surface made of Astroturf instead of the usual grass.

"The turf took some getting used to," Gordon said."It is a lot quicker than the fields we are used to playing on."

While her teammates were adjusting to the surface change, Pieciak turned away seven shots to secure her second shutout of the season.

In the 36th minute, the Judges were able to convert a corner kick from Jessica Druckman '06 to Jillian Peo '06 for their first goal.Druckman also assisted on the team's second goal. The team was anchored by Christine Fulton '07 and Gordon, who played very well on defense.

"We are starting to mesh and play more composed soccer," Gordon said. "We didn't shoot enough and should have scored more, but the season is just beginning and so far the team is looking very strong."

The Judges will defend their undefeated record tomorrow when they host Simmons College at 4 p.m. The Judges continue their season on the road on Sunday against Springfield College.
