SSB to offer DVD rental service beginning Tuesday
In order to increase entertainment options on campus, the Student Service Bureau (SSB) will launch a video rental service from their office in the basement of Usdan Student Center on November 4.Ranging from "American Pie" to "Wag the Dog," the SSB will offer a wide selection of 149 DVDs. The titles include comedies, dramas, action movies, and romances. The selection also varies with older releases such as "Rocky" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" and newer releases like "A Beautiful Mind" and "Ocean's 11". A full list is available at the SSB office.
Rentals will cost three dollars for two nights and students will be able to rent multiple movies at one time. If a movie is not returned by its due date, the rental will be automatically extended by two more days and the renter will incur an additional cost.
Students can rent and return movies during regular SSB hours: 11-9 p.m. on Monday, 11-6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11-5 p.m. on Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The SSB's idea to create the video store was inspired by the VHS rental service, which ended a year and a half ago. The VHS collection at that time was owned by a former SSB president. When she reclaimed her video library from the SSB, the service ended.
The president of the SSB last year, Rochelle Heller '03, pursued the idea of reopening the video rental service with DVDs. Last fall, Heller purchased the 149 DVDs for around $2,000 from a company that sells second-hand movies at a reduced price.
Despite a wide selection of 149 movies, the SSB sees room for expansion.
"We will not expand the collection until the renal service's popularity is assessed over the next few months," Murphy said.
Many students are excited about renting DVDs on campus.
"The new service is very convenient. Now we won't have to go into Waltham to rent movies," Michael Jean '07 said.
"The whole thing sounds pretty sweet to me," Jeremy Sisselman '07 said.
But some older students don't think the rental service will change the way they rent movies.
Steve Dupree '04 said, "It may be good for people who don't have cars, but when it is easy to get into Waltham, Blockbuster has better prices and more selection."
The SSB hopes their new service will become a useful resource for Brandeis students seeking entertainment and is confident the new venture will be successful.
"The video rental service is something students want, will utilize and will continue to use in the future," Murphy said.
