WSoccer racks up two victories
The Brandeis womens soccer team continued their undefeated campaign, as they easily defeated Simmons College and then Springfield College this week. The Judges added another shutout to their list of achievements for the young season as they went on to knock off Simmons College 3-0 in Boston on Wednesday. Brandeis returned home this Saturday to play Springfield College and it proved to be another successful day for the Judges, as they improved their record to 6-0 on the season with a 3-1 win over the visiting Pride, who had recorded an impressive scoreless tie at Williams College earlier in the season.
Against the host Sharks of Simmons, midfielder Lauren Gregor '06 initiated the scoring when she recorded her sixth goal of the season at the 26:54 mark. Gregor's team-leading sixth goal of the year was assisted by Jillian Peo '06.
The Judges never trailed after taking the early advantage. Brandeis' next goal came midway through the game as Melissa Gordon '05 converted a brilliant pass from Melissa DeLowe '04. Gordon's goal was her third this season, and it was the only goal of the game that came from a corner kick.
Toward the end of regulation, Skylar Buchanan '05 added an unassisted insurance goal (her second of the season) for the Judges at the 74:43 mark.
Natasha Pieciak '06 and Mari Levine '06 combined to blank Simmons as the Judges recorded yet another shutout during a thusfar stellar 2003 campaign. The Simmons offense offered nary a threat all game, as Pieciak was forced to make a mere three saves and Levine just two of her own.
The Judges defense was stellar throughout, allowing only those five shots and putting the clamps on Simmons coach Dick Dawson's struggling offense. The Judges worked tirelessly on offense, stringing together 18 shots on net and holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Despite falling behind Springfield (3-2-1) 1-0 after a lazer shot by junior forward Jessica Kovacs in the 15th minute, the Judges fought to knot the score at one on a goal by Peo in the 23rd minute before taking the lead for good when sniper Gregor tallied her sixth of the season in the 45th minute.
"We talked to each other right after the they scored and we knew we hadn't played as well as we couldso we had to just step it up. Our goal was to score before the half to keep our team morale up," Peo said.
Pieciak stonewalled the Pride with a season-best ten saves.
After their two wins this week, the Judges are beginning to feel the weight of growing expectations.
"I think (being undefeated) adds pressure, but it's not too much. It's something that's always in the back of our minds," Peo said.
Tuesday at 4:30, the Judges play host to local rival Wellesley College. Over their past two contests, fifth-year Head Coach Liz Driscoll's bunch has outscored their opponents 7-1 with wins over Simmons and Framingham State.
Under Driscoll's leadership, the Blue have compiled a solid 24-7-4 NEWMAC conference record. Wellesley qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1999, reaching the regional final with wins over Endicott College and Connecticut College.
"It's going to be a really tough game," Peo said. "Last year we went into overtime against them so we know they are one of our toughest opponents.
