Alumni and professor discuss social justice

The University along with the Hiatt Career Center and the Heller School for Social Policy and Management hosted the SoJust Leadership Forum last Tuesday in the Hassenfeld Conference center in Upper Sherman. The forum, titled "Journeys in Social Justice, Beyond Brandeis," was designed to encourage students to pursue careers in social justice and utilize resources that are largely available to them at Brandeis. Provost reappoints Magid to a second term as dean

Provost Marty Krauss and Provost-elect Steve A.N. Goldstein '78 announced this summer that Bruce Magid has been reappointed to serve a second 5-year term as dean of the International Business School, according to a June 29 BrandeisNOW press release. Magid joined the Brandeis faculty as dean of IBS in August 2007, and his upcoming term will run from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017, according to the press release. In an email to the Justice, Magid highlighted some of his goals for his upcoming term and indicated that the next few years will mark the beginning of a refreshing period for IBS. "We will maintain our distinctly global focus, ? we'll build on our reputation for delivering academic excellence, attract the best students from around the world and open up new job and internship possibilities?especially in emerging economies," he said. "We will actively seek new opportunities to collaborate with departments and groups across the Brandeis campus.


Student groups plan, host Multicultural Freedom Seder

Hillel at Brandeis, the Brandeis Pluralism Alliance, the Interfaith Chaplaincy and the Graduate Student Association hosted a Multicultural Freedom Seder in the South Campus Commons on Tuesday, April 12 to celebrate freedom and diversity while retelling the story of the Jewish exodus from Egypt.


Hiatt hosts health care event

The University hosted its inaugural Public Health Forum event that was co-sponsored by the Hiatt Career Center and the Office of Career Services at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management in the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center Thursday evening.The event included a combination of speeches and networking opportunities that allowed undergraduate and graduate students to evaluate potential future employers and job options.Daniel Pellegrom, president of Pathfinder International, addressed some of the key issues concerning health care today.Pellegrom noted how to effectively manage a corporation or organization by "making management an opportunity [and] making the organization for which you work an instrument itself that does a better job at delivering the services that you care about and believe in." Pellegrom also spoke about how to empower employees and what it means to be a competent leader.


Professor McIntosh receives Geertz prize

Prof. Janet McIntosh (ANTH) was recently awarded the 2010 Clifford Geertz prize for the Anthropology of Religion for her book, The Edge of Islam: Power, Personhood, and Ethno-religious Boundaries on the Kenya Coast, according to BrandeisNOW.McIntosh's book explores the ethnic and religious tensions of the Swahili and Giriama peoples of Kenya while discussing how each group specifically relates to the practice of Islam.


Survey examines college LGBTQ students' perception of safety

Prof. Karen V. Hansen (SOC) and Sara Wooten (GRAD), a master's student in Sociology and Women's and Gender Studies at Brandeis, have been conducting a study that seeks to investigate the incidence of rape and assault against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer college students in the Boston area and to assess the efforts undertaken by higher-learning institutions to prevent incidents of reported sexual violence, according to the survey's webpage.


Heller School offers event on microfinance

The Women's and Gender Studies Program hosted a conference to discuss microfinance and its effects on communities at the "Microfinance: Does It Work?" panel discussion that took place in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management Thursday evening.
