The Brandeis University men's and women's cross-country teams got their respective seasons off to strong starts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Shriners' Invitational on Saturday. Without captain Ed Colvin '14, who usually sets the pace for the men's team, the Judges still finished sixth out of 28 teams at the competition.

Once every four years, athletes join together on an international stage to display their skills and showcase their country's colors. In addition to the Olympics, though, there are the Maccabiah Games, which are held once every four years in Israel and feature some of the top Jewish athletes from more than 30 countries. This past summer, Brandeis sent two of its top volleyball players, Becca Fischer '13 and current co-captain Yael Einhorn '14, to the 19th Maccabiah Games to compete for the United States, display their national pride and even dominate a few volleyball matches along the way. Einhorn reflected that her most memorable moment at the games was the opening ceremony. "It's a huge area, all the seats are filled with parents and athletes," she said.
The Brandeis men's and women's tennis teams both labored through periods of inconsistency last season, eventually ending with records of 8-12 and 10-9 respectively. The men's team then earned the sixth seed at the University Athletic Association Championships and a match against third-ranked Washington University in St.
The second-ranked Brandeis University women's softball team lost a heartbreaker at home in the opening round quarterfinals of the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Tournament, falling to seventh seed Worcester State University 6-4 in 8 innings on Wednesday, May 8 on Marcus Field. The Judges struck early against Worcester State, capitalizing on a leadoff single from centerfielder Amanda Genovese '15, who scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first inning to give the Judges a key 1-0 advantage. Brandeis would double its lead one inning later when second baseman Leah McWilliams '14 hit a single that deflected off the Worcester third baseman's glove.

The Brandeis Haiti Initiative once again hosted Hoops for Haiti-a basketball game which pits University faculty against students-this past Sunday, and once again, the event proved to be both successful and wildly entertaining. The event raises money for Camp Empowering Through Education, a camp started by Brandeis alumna Shaina Gilbert '10 that works to educate nearly 100 Haitian children each summer and is staffed each year by current Brandeis students. Brandeis Haiti Initiative Co-President Amanda Dryer '13 explained that the event not only creates unity within the community by joining students and faculty members, but also highlights the importance the University places on social justice. Dryer explained that the event was purposely placed on Admitted Students Day as a way to tell the students "welcome to the family.
Though the calendar may say it is spring, the weather outside still proves to be cold. Regardless of the temperature, this past Saturday was a perfect time for a charity soccer event. The Kickin' Cancer Tournament, created by the men's soccer team and Alex's Lemonade Stand's Brandeis chapter, is a five-on-five co-ed tournament featuring some of the biggest names from both the men's and women's soccer teams.
The men's fencing team has not sent a saber fencer to the NCAA Championships since 2009. Olympic silver medal saber Tim Morehouse '00, who won silver in 2008, was the last Brandeis fencer to earn All-America honors. Late last month, the history books were re-written. Saberist Adam Mandel '15 surged to a 12th-place finish on the second day of the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors in San Antonio, Tex. The road to the NCAA Championships was not an easy one for Mandel, who secured the ninth and final spot from the Northeast Region on March 10.
