Squad closes season in tournament semifinals

Guard Niki Laskaris '16 put up a desperation three-pointer with one second left against Smith College on Saturday, looking to will her team forward on an unlikely run to the finals of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The Judges, in their matchup with the third-seeded Smith Pioneers, nearly overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to make that a reality.

Squad overcomes rally from Duke in tight win

The men's fencing team found themselves in a bind on Saturday afternoon during the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. The Judges led the host Blue Devils, needing just two victories from the sabre squad to clinch the match over the 10th ranked team in the nation.

Judges' guard Vilmont stands out in first year

In a team full of seniors, it can be hard for a first-year player to shine. That has not been the case for guard Robinson Vilmont '17. In his first year as a member of the men's basketball team, Vilmont has appeared in all 16 games this season and has impressed for the Judges, averaging 7.1 points per game on 45 percent shooting from the field.

Australian Open features two first-time winners in Wawrinka and Li as top-seeds falter in late round

First-time winners proved to prevail at the 2014 Australian Open at Melbourne Park. Stanislas Wawrinka, who entered the tournament as the eighth-ranked player in the world, and Li Na, who entered ranked fourth in the world, won the men's and women's singles titles, respectively. Wawrinka had never taken a set against world number-one Rafael Nadal entering their match in the Australian Open finals on Sunday. That made no difference to the 8th-ranked Wawrinka, who cruised past the top-ranked Nadal in the final, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to earn his first Grand Slam title ever.

Lazarovich eyes further successes in program

David Lazarovich '16, a specialist in the breaststroke and the individual medley, has hopes to further mold the sport at Brandeis just two years after the restoration of the swimming and diving team. "It's a rare opportunity to be part of a swim team but even rarer to make a new name," he said.

University to serve as host in national meet

The top collegiate fencers in the nation will officially be convening in Waltham come the 2016 season. In a video release on December 11, 2013, the NCAA announced Brandeis will host the 2016 National Collegiate FencingChampionships at Gosman Sports and Convocation Center. The meet will bring nationally-ranked fencers together from Divisions I, II and III. Following 1994, 1999, and most recently, 2004, the 2016 edition of the NCAA tournament will mark the fourth time that the Judges have hosted the meet. The Judges, encouragingly, have had success in years that they have hosted the tournament. Brandeis produced All-Americans in two of the three years as hosts and earned a school-record 12th overall finish in 1999. Coach Bill Shipman outlined how the hosting opportunity came to fruition for the University. "Since we hosted the tournament [in 2004], it was always in the back of our minds to host in the future, and I proposed to [Director of Athletics] Sheryl [Sousa] '90 to put our name in the bidding process," he explained.

Squads face off against strong foes in meeting

In a season of just 10 meets, it is rare for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams to compete against the same team multiple times. At the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Gompei Invitational, held this past Saturday and Sunday, the Judges had a chance to strike back against WPI after a defeat earlier this season. Brandeis made large strides in their second meeting featuring the Engineers. The men placed fifth in the tournament with 994 points while the women took home an eighth-place finish, scoring 394 points. David Lazarovich '16 credited the Judges' knowledge of the pool as a reason for their success. "We were one of the first teams to swim in that pool [on Nov.
