Judges take third at NEIFC Championships

On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Brandeis Judges participated in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference tournament held at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The NEIFC is a league focused on supporting and developing intercollegiate fencing programs in and around New England. NEIFC hosts two tournaments each season. The first is the Fall Invitational usually held the first Saturday in November, and the Championship is usually held in late February.




Potential sale of New York Mets to Steve Cohen falls through

If New York Mets fans are indeed envious of their neighbors who root for the New York Yankees, it is understandable. The Yankees have won 27 championships in the team’s 106 years (approximately one championship every four years) while the Mets have won two championships in their 57 years of existence (approximately one championship every 30 years).  






Judges swim into 2020 UAA Championships

On Saturday, the Brandeis men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams beat Clark University in their final dual meet of the 2019-2020 season. The meet was held at Clark University in Worcester, MA. The men won 142–110 over the Clark University Cougars and the women won 135–105. Overall, the Judges won 24 of the 32 events, dominating the Clark University Cougars.




Chiefs versus 49ers in Super Bowl LIV: A tale of two coaches

Super Bowl LIV was a contest between two powerful teams: the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes versus the San Francisco 49ers with their devastating defense, led by Rookie of the Year defensive end Nick Bosa. However, the contrast between the respective head coaches is also striking and, for many fans, seeing Andy Reid, the veteran and highly regarded head coach of the Chiefs, win his first Super Bowl was very gratifying. Here is a history of these two successful head coaches.




Eli Manning is a ‘giant among Giants’

Eli Manning has announced retirement after spending 16 years as a quarterback for the New York Giants. The Louisiana native is the son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and the brother of former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning played college football at the University of Mississippi and was the first overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft. He was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers and was immediately traded to the New York Giants. Ernie Accorsi was the manager who traded for Manning, and in light of Manning’s retirement, Accorsi said, “that over a period of years he’s always going to be there. Those kinds of quarterback always give you a chance to win, and for 16 years, he did that for this franchise.”  


Rest in Peace, Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bean Bryant of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26 in Calabasas, California in a helicopter accident along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant. Kobe Bryant was 41-years-old. He was best known for the 20 years he spent as an American professional basketball player. With the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected Bryant from Lower Merion High School, and he was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Vlade Divac. He remained with the Lakers for his entire 20-year career, at the time a record. 


Season looks up as rocky season opener fades into the past

The Brandeis University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams capped their Senior Day meet with a pair of wins on Jan. 18 at Wheaton College. The competition was held at Wheaton College because Brandeis’ Linsey Pool is undergoing renovations. The men’s team won 181–109 over the Keene State Owls and 178–96 over the Bridgewater State University Bears. The women were also victorious, with a sweep of 183–88 over Keene State and 195–82 over Bridgewater State. Overall, the Judges won 21 of the 32 events that took place that day.
