Views on the News: Biden-Harris victory

On Saturday Nov. 7, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. was elected the 46th president of the United States. After a tumultuous election season, Biden beat lame-duck President Donald J. Trump with 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232 electoral votes. Biden’s win is largely attributed to support in swing states such as Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Biden’s win also marks a historical moment for California Sen. Kamala Harris, who is the first Black and South Asian woman to be elected vice president of the United States. What was your reaction to the Biden-Harris win? What do you think should be the top priorities for the new administration? Also, what do you anticipate as the biggest resistance to the new administration?  


Brandeis University COVID-19 Statistics: Week of Nov 8

Brandeis University is keeping the community informed about its COVID-19 statistics through an online dashboard. This dashboard contains information about how many tests were collected, how many individuals were tested, how many individuals tested positive, how many students are in quarantine, how many students are in isolation and the seven-day average for positive tests on campus. The dashboard also includes various statistics about areas in Massachusetts. The Justice will produce infographics each week, visually displaying the information that the University releases online.

Prof. Laurence Simon leads conversation about his career in international development, human rights activism

In honor of Prof. Laurence Simon’s (Heller) influential career in international development, the Heller School for Social Policy and Management hosted a conversation with him, moderated by Prof. Rajesh Sampath (Heller). Simon is a professor of International Development and the Director of the Center for Global Development and Sustainability. The event focused on Simon's upbringing and early adulthood and how this led to his career in humanitarian aid and international development.



Result to second Massachusetts ballot question still in counting

In addition to casting votes for candidates for a variety of national, state and local elected offices, Massachusetts voters also had the opportunity on Tuesday to decide the fate of two statewide ballot questions. The first question concerns access to mechanical data in motor vehicles, and the second would establish ranked choice voting. Massachusetts Question 1 passed with 75% voting yes. Votes on Question 2 are still being counted, but supporters of the initiative conceded early Wednesday morning, according to WGBH.





University president and columnist discuss the presidential election

In light of the U.S. presidential election today, Tom Friedman ’75, H’88, a New York Times columnist and author, joined the Brandeis community on Thursday, Oct. 29 for a virtual discussion with University President Ron Liebowitz. During the event, which was titled “Thinking Ahead to the Presidential Election,” Friedman discussed a wide array of concerns pertaining to the election and voiced his predictions for the outcome.


Administrators host virtual check-in about spring semester

As the fall semester and the COVID-19 pandemic progress, the question of how spring semester will play out is on everyone’s minds. On Oct. 26, University President Ron Liebowitz, along with other members of the administration, hosted a virtual check-in for students and their families to answer questions about pandemic guidelines and plans for the upcoming spring semester.


Panelists discuss the act of democracy in relation to the 2020 election

The Heller School for Social Policy and Management moderated a panel discussion last Tuesday, Oct. 27 about the nature of democratic participation and civic engagement in 2020. The panelists were Prof. Anita Hill (Heller), University of California, Los Angeles Professor of Social Welfare and Public Policy Fernando Torres-Gil Ph.D. ’76 and Prof. Dan Kryder, the Louis Stelberg Chair in Law and Politics. The discussion, titled “The Act of Democracy,” referenced an op-ed written by Former United States Representative John Lewis, which he wrote a few days before his death, stating that “democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part.” 


Doctor discusses role of opioids in treating chronic pain

The Justice spoke with Dr. Michael Schatman, adjunct faculty member at Tufts University Dental and Tufts University Medical School and editor in chief of the Journal of Pain Research, about prescription opioid policy in the United States in an Oct. 29 interview. Schatman responded to the points that Medical Director of Opioid Policy Research at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management Dr. Andrew Kolodny raised in a recent interview with the Justice regarding opioid prescription.


TEDxBrandeisUniversity streams pre-recorded speeches by its five speakers

Student club TEDxBrandeisUniversity hosted its annual event on Nov. 1. The event, which had been postponed twice, once because of COVID-19 restrictions, featured speeches from Ruben Kanya ’14, Prof. Kristen Lucken (IGS), Eric Moyal ’17, M.A. ’18, M.S. ’21, Henry Chen ’23 and Mendel Weintraub ’21, all under the topic of “Wellness in the New Age.” These speeches, recorded on Oct. 14 by Media Technology Services, were streamed on Facebook Live and in a Zoom watch party. Each of the speakers interpreted this prompt differently, all expressing some sort of vulnerability to their virtual audiences.
