Princeton prof wins $25,000 prize

The first $25,000 Joseph B. and Toby Gittler Prize for outstanding and lasting contributions to racial, ethnic and religious relations will be awarded late this month to Prof.


Relief efforts raise money for victims

Members of the Student Union and National Collegiate Volunteers led a weeklong disaster relief campaign and raised just under $5,000 for victims of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in Cuba, Haiti and along the southeastern American coast, according to Noah Kaplan '09, a member of the National Collegiate Volunteers, and Jamie Ansorge '09, Student Union director of communications.The money raised will be donated by the end of this week to the American Red Cross and to international relief funds "Enough people expressed an interest" in donating their time and money to providing aid, Kaplan said.


New faculty to advise classes

The Office of Academic Services hired Sarah Hoenig, program manager for the Lerman-Neubauer Fellowship Program; Megan Penyack '99, adviser to the junior and senior classes; and Emily Walsh, adviser to the first-year class and supervisor of Brandeis Undergraduate Group Study.Sarah Hoenig joined the Office of Academic Services as the program manager for the newly established Lerman-Neubauer Fellowship Program.


Alum donates $15 mil

A $15 million gift by Donald Soffer '54, the largest donation to the University by an alumnus in its history, was given to the Campaign for Brandeis Initiative to help fund the constructon of the atrium in the new Carl J.


Club supports state legislation

Brandeis Students Against the Judge Rotenberg Center has been working since last semester to garner media attention to push through bills in the Massachusetts state legislature that will inhibit and monitor the JRC, a residential and day program center in Canton, Mass.


East Hill reconstructed

The hill by East Quad is being renovated to provide students with a safer and more accessible route to classes from the area, East Quad Senator Tamar Ariel '10 said.


Professor receives book honor

Prof. Edward Kaplan (ROMS) was awarded the 2007 National Jewish Book Award in the American Jewish Studies category for Spiritual Radical: Abraham Joshua Heschel in America, 1940-72, which details the three decades since Heschel's emigration from Germany to the United States in 1940.The book is a follow up to Kaplan's 1998 work, Abraham Joshua Heschel: Prophetic Witness.


Brandeis debate team hosts and judges weekend tournament

The Brandeis Academic Debate and Speech Society hosted a tournament from last Friday to Saturday involving over 200 students from 25 schools across the country, a competition that was part of the American Parliamentary Debate Association network, which includes over 30 liberal arts colleges and universities.BADASS could not compete in the tournament, but provided housing, venues and judging for the debaters.
