Scarry speaks to Phi Beta Kappa

Harvard University English and American Literature Prof. Elaine Scarry spoke at Saturday's Phi Beta Kappa initiation ceremony about how beauty can inspire individuals "to repair the injuries of the world" and argued-with an audience member's interruption-that nuclear proliferation is a "destroyer of beauty."There were mixed reactions about Scarry's speech from this year's 71 seniors and nine juniors inducted into the national academic society and from their family members in attendance.


A housing evolution

Meet Babushka Brown '57. A fictionalized character used in the University's Student Handbook from 1953 to 1954, Babushka was the perennial first-year who "herald[ed] the honor system" and helped the administration impart the school's parietal rules to her peers, at the same time reminding "those upperclassmen suffering from 'convenient amnesia'" how to behave.In her 18 years before Brandeis, Babushka had developed a "staggering amount of 'savoir faire,'" according to the Handbook description.
