United efforts

Last Friday night, over 450 students attended Shabbat United, a joint venture between Hillel and Chabad at Brandeis, to celebrate the weekly Jewish holiday in a communal way. The meal, held in the Levin Ballroom, featured the traditional blessings over wine (Kiddush), bread (challah) and grace after meals (birkat hamazon), in addition to aspects of both the typical Hillel and Chabad weekly experiences.


Apparent suicide stuns campus

Akshay R. Venkatesh '14 was found dead in Ziv 127 yesterday morning by two members of the Brandeis Police Department after an apparent suicide, University officials said. Venkatesh, an international student, was studying neuroscience at the University. The officers were performing a wellness visit on Venkatesh, according to an email from Bill Burger, associate vice president of communications.


University receives fewer applications

In a climate where the number of applications to many of America's elite universities is rising, the number of students who applied to Brandeis for the Class of 2016 declined in comparison to last year.


Student costs to increase next year

The University administration announced yesterday that the Board of Trustees approved the budget for fiscal 2013, which includes a 4.1 percent total cost hike for current students and a reduced size for the class of 2016 to between 800 and 820 students.
