Phi Beta Kappa inducts newest junior and senior members

A group of 94 junior and senior students were praised for past accomplishments and warned of worldly troubles as they were inducted into the Brandeis chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society at a ceremony Saturday afternoon in Spingold Theater.


Student pleads guilty in assault

A student arrested last month on charges of assaulting police pleaded guilty to four counts of assault and must serve 12 months of probation and apologize to the two Waltham police officers involved in the March 25 altercation, according to court documents.Kathryn Schill '06, a 21 year-old psychology major from Longmeadow, Mass., entered her plea at a May 10 hearing in Waltham District Court.She was arraigned March 27 on three counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon following an incident two days earlier in which Schill spit at and bit the hand of Officer Kristen Philpott and punched Officer John Connarton.The most serious count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon was reduced to assault and battery-a charge which resulted from Schill kicking Philpott with the Uggs boots she was wearing at the time.In addition to writing letters of apology to Philpott and Connarton, Schill was ordered to undergo drug and alcohol screenings at the discretion of her probation officer.


Jordanian prince to address seniors at commencement

Prince El Hassan bin Talal, a Jordanian royal known for his advocacy of religious dialogue and international peace, will address the graduating Class of 2006 at the University's 55th commencement ceremony May 21.Bin Talal will receive an honorary degree, along with acclaimed playwright Tony Kushner, Marilyn Horne, Blenda Wilson, Judith and Sidney Swartz and Mimi Silbert, the University announced April 20 in an e-mail to the graduating class.Prince El Hassan, the youngest son in the Jordanian royal family and brother to the late King Hussein, is the author of seven books and an internationally recognized promoter of interfaith dialogue.


Administrators to begin work on HIV proposal

Members of the Student Global AIDS Campaign met last week with administrators to discuss the possibility of bringing HIV testing to campus.There is a proposal to implement testing as early as next fall, SGAC coordinator Iyah Romm '07 said.


Mock Trial to attend national contest

The Brandeis University Mock Trial Association will send a team to the national competition for a second consecutive year this weekend, club president Jeremy Widder '06 said.Several team members earned individual honors and one team won a spot at the national contest after victories at two regional competitions last month at Clark University and Princeton University, Widder said.


Midyear voting problems persist

A computer glitch kept midyear students from voting for their class representatives in last month's Student Union elections, marking the second such incident this academic year, Union Secretary Aaron Braver '07 said."I'm clearly upset that people who should be able to vote aren't able to vote," Braver said.


Jack Abramoff '81 donated $50 to 'Deis in 2002

Although former Washington lobbyist Jack A. Abramoff '81 admitted earlier this month to embezzling millions of dollars from various political interest groups, he donated a mere $50 to his alma mater in the 25 years since his graduation.According to Nancy Winship, the vice president for institutional advancement, Abramoff gave the donation in 2002 in response to a mass-mailing from the development office.
