Demonstrate commitment to ending the conflict in Syria

The Syrian civil war is the most prominent humanitarian crisis of the year. Yet this fact alone will never mobilize the West to resolve the crisis, and neither will the incentive of increasing refugee flows, the threat of radicalization — which often pairs with destabilization of certain regions — or the marring of Western global conscience.

Edward Snowden was all over the news when I graduated high school in 2013. It was still surprising, though, when our salutatorian stood up and made his speech about the Snowden case — one in which a former government contracted employee had leaked classified information from the National Security Agency.


Reevaluate crippling sanctions on Russia to alleviate public

Nov. 21, 2013 marked the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis. Thousands of people filled Maidan Nezalezhnosti (“Independence Square”) in Kiev to protest President Viktor Yanukovych’s refusal to sign a deal bringing closer political and economic ties to the European Union in favor of a deal with Russia.
