Fighting for representation

Student Union Senator for Racial Minorities J.V. Souffrant '13 has his work cut out for him. Not only does Souffrant have the responsibility of serving as a representative for racial minorities on campus, but he also has to address the legality of his position and discuss the issue with members of the Constitutional Review Committee.


Midyear senator position proposed

Student Union senators are lobbying the Constitutional Review Committee, which is considering changes to the Student Union Constitution, to consider the creation of a midyear senator position as the committee undertakes its review this year.


Review of staffing levels is under way

The Administrative Resource Review Committee began its efforts to consider the University's staffing levels, management structure and ways to improve the efficiency of work processes at its first meetings, which were held Nov.


University reorganizes high school programming

The University is consolidating three high school summer programs at Brandeis-the Genesis Program, the Berkshire Institute for Music and the Arts and Impact Boston-into a new Office of High School Programs in part of an effort to expand its options for high school students, Provost Marty Krauss said.


Noninventory cleaning product sickens Village residents

A number of students were sickened by bleach in a noninventory cleaning product used in a gender-neutral bathroom on the third floor of the Village A House last Monday afternoon, according to affected students and Director of Facilities Services Peter Baker in an e-mail to the Justice.Baker wrote that he learned late Tuesday morning that custodial supervision staff had responded to a call on Monday evening "and found an odor of bleach and a non-inventory cleaning product . that contained bleach." He wrote that Office of Facilities Services does not "purchase or use bleach when cleaning." "Not surprisingly, we are seeing more and more non-inventory cleaning products and sanitizers around campus as a result of flu concerns," Baker wrote.


Learning goals drafting process begins

University academic departments are starting the process of drafting learning goals for all majors and minors by spring 2011 as the University prepares to submit an interim report to the New England Association of Schools and Colleges on its progress in meeting the group's accreditation guidelines.


University to look at faculty tasks

The new Faculty Workload Committee will examine the distribution of workloads among Arts and Sciences faculty in an effort to implement a recommendation made by the Curriculum and Academic Restructuring Steering committee last spring, Provost Marty Krauss and Faculty Senate Chair Prof.


Univ projects larger-than-expected budget deficits

At last week's Board meeting, trustees discussed a possible deficit of $3 million or less for fiscal 2010 and $14.5 million for fiscal 2011, as opposed to earlier projections of a balanced budget in 2010 and a deficit of $7 million to $9 million for fiscal 2011, faculty representative to the Board of Trustees Prof.


Students stage protest during Gold's speech

Several protesters who briefly interrupted former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold by standing up with signs taped to their shirts at last Thursday's "The Challenge of the UN Gaza Report" event said that they felt violated by other attendees.
