Club volleyball wins alumni tournament

After splitting its first two sets against Boston College, the men's club volleyball team trailed 14-8 and faced match point in the third and final set of the third annual Brandeis Invitational Alumni Tournament Championship on Oct.


Former Athletics director dies at 87

Nick Rodis, Brandeis' director of Athletics from 1967 to 1984, died last Friday at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital at the age of 87. "He was the guy who turned Brandeis Athletics around," men's soccer coach Mike Coven said.


Fencing great Joe Pechinsky passes

Joseph E. Pechinsky, Brandeis' men's fencing coach from 1970 to 1980 and a member of the United States Fencing Hall of Fame, died at the age of 92 last Thursday at the Radius Health Care Center in Danvers, Mass. "He was very much a gentleman to everyone that he met all the time," said men's and women's fencing coach Bill Shipman, who took over the coaching job at Brandeis after Pechinsky left in 1981.


Cross Country: Runners start off season on high note

The men's cross country team finished second out of 34 schools, while the women's cross country team placed fourth out of 37 schools in both teams' first scoring meet of the season at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Shriners' Invitational last Saturday. "It was a really good start to the season," said coach John Evans.


Softball: Softball earns second-place tie

While soccer matches often end in ties, softball games rarely do. However, due to inclement weather, the softball team tied the University of New England 7-7 in the runner-up contest of the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Tournament on May 15.


Edhance College Day is a real hit

By showing their college identifications at Gate B at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, college students were able to attend Edhance Inc.'s first annual College Day on April 20.The event was held to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the first game played at Fenway Park, which saw the Red Sox defeat the New York Highlanders, who are now called the New York Yankees, 7-6 in 11 innings.


Softball: Squad finishes week at .500

Right-hander Casey Ducinski '13 pitched a complete game four-hit shutout while striking out five batters in the softball team's 4-0 win over Tufts University last Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader.


Hoops for Haiti, a slam dunk for charity

After suffering a 37-31 defeat to the faculty/staff team in the first annual Hoops for Haiti basketball fundraiser last year, the student team got its revenge this year by going on a 13-6 run in the final 8 minutes of yesterday's game to win 49-42."This year, we made sure we were going to win," Student Union President Daniel Acheampong '11 said.
