From Kraft to labor, an activist

It overtook campus. Brandeis juniors and seniors may recall the Kraft referendum in spring 2002 to remove Kraft products from campus because the company is owned by the tobacco giant Phillip Morris.The leader of that campaign, Nicole Karlebach '04, had the honor of addressing Brandeis' graduating class of 2004 as the senior commencement speaker Sunday.


Majoring in the world

Brandeis students are enthusiastic about the introduction of the new International and Global Studies (IGS) program here.Faculty members gave their final approval to the establishment of an IGS program last spring.


College presidents' pay rises

Four university presidents earned more than $800,000 in salary and benefits during the 2002 fiscal year and three grossed more than $1 million including compensation from serving on other boards, according to the most recent edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education.The presidents of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Vanderbilt University, University of Pennsylvania and Rockefeller University were ranked as the four most highly paid university presidents according to statistics published in the Chronicle.Brandeis University President Jehuda Reinharz was ranked 36th on a list of 42 research university presidents, according to data in the Chronicle, receiving $340,632 during the 2001-2002 fiscal year, a two percent salary increase from the 2000-2001 fiscal year.


Grad has Nobel Idea; wins prize

Brandeis University alumnus Roderick MacKinnon' 78, a professor of molecular neurobiology and biophysics at Rockefeller University in New York City was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry last week.


Gay times in America

In recent months, Americans have cast their eyes on the queer guy and found themselves grappling with issues of sexuality, from the Supreme Court decision overturning the sodomy laws, to the new wave of gay-themed television and the increased funding of the Harvey Milk School in New York, the nation's first and only school chartered as a safe place for queer youth and their families.


Future of Usdan space still up in air

The vacated space in the Usdan Student Center that used to house various student organizations and the Department of Student Life will be refurbished and become the home for many departments, organizations and student clubs all vying for this prime location, according to administrators.With the opening of the Shapiro Campus Center last year, Student Life, the Brandeis University Bookstore and many student organizations, including the Justice, WBRS, the Student Union, Waltham Group and Archon, moved their operations from Usdan to Shapiro.


Bugallo chosen as senior speaker

Ana Yoselin Bugallo '03 was announced as the Senior Class Speaker, this past weekBugallo, known as Yos to many, is currently the Student Union secretary and an active member of the Brandeis Community.


Mock Trial returns

After becoming a chartered club at Brandeis, last year, Mock Trial was able to send three teams, two of eight and one of seven members, to the regional competition in Manchester, CT during the weekend of January 31.
