75 students kicked off campus network

Seventy-five students have been disconnected from the University network in the past two weeks, which marks the highest spike in intranet kick-offs since August, according to UNet Systems Administrator Rich Graves.


Admin. deducts $40K from SAF club funding

After the administration did not bill students an additional $12 supposedly dictated by the recent Union financial amendment to pay Senate's financial advisor, $40,000 was used from the Student Activities Fee (SAF), leaving campus organizations less money to finance their needs than last semester.Assistant Vice President for Students and Enrollment Brian Walton said the amendment - which was supposed to charge students an extra $12 for the Union's administrative assistant Loretta Shagoury - passed too late to go into effect for spring billing."There was a dispute about the amendment in mid-November," Walton said.


Labor Coalition seeks Admin help

The Brandeis Labor Coalition's attempt to involve the Administration into helping secure worker's rights on campus has evoked discussion regarding how much initiative the University can take to ensure fair labor practices with Hurley of America, an independent contractor that provides custodial services on campus.Some complaints by the Labor Coalition appearing in the club's minutes from Oct.


Focus of diversity group in question

Recent racial tensions on campus have sparked debate concerning the purpose of the Student Union Diversity Committee (DC). While some senators believe the committee should focus only on racial tensions, others feel it should encompass all issues of diversity.Racial minority senator and co-chair of the DC Kassian Polin '05 said he is among those who oppose the committee focusing solely on racial issues."It is against every instinct in my body to act against the interests of racial minority students," Polin wrote to the DC's mailing list.


Student Union Secretary accused of rule juggling

Union Secretary Danny Silverman reversed and reinstated a controversial election rule last week, according to Jenny Feinberg '07.Feinberg, currently the chair of the Project Brandeis University Spirit committee, was disqualified from the race for Class of 2007 senator last semester for violating that regulation-Article VI, Section 2 of the elections rules.Feinberg placed a link in her AOL Instant Messenger profile to the UNet election, violating the restriction on direct links to the voting site.Last week, Feinberg sent an e-mail to Silverman proposing an amendment this rule.Upon hearing her recommendation, Silverman agreed to change the rule, according to Feinberg.Feinberg said she decided to run for Class of 2007 senator again this semester after hearing this response.


Asbestos in North Quad not a threat

After an abatement testing the presence of asbestos several years ago in North Quad, a small piece was recovered two weeks ago in Michael Stern's '06 room on the first floor of Cable, according to Director of Facilities, Mark Collins.

Seyhan Musaoglu '05, an international student from Turkey, has been forced under financial pressure to consider transferring to another school for her last year in college.


Boston bound: Busing improved

Recent student complaints regarding late and overcrowded buses, as well as problematic bus drivers, has prompted Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan to improve public transportation provided by Crystal Transport bus service to and from Brandeis into Cambridge and Boston.Callahan said he added extra buses and will maintain communication with Crystal in his all student e-mail sent last Friday.


Commuters out of space in T-Lot

Lack of available parking at Brandeis has caused grief among commuter students, who are either forced to park illegally in undesignated areas or in distant lots.Eugenia Shlimovich '04, a commuter student, said she attempted to park in T-Lot, where she has a permit, but there are no available spots.


Contract with Coke in limbo

In spite of a contract with Coca-Cola signed in 1997 that gave the soft drink giant exclusive distribution rights on campus, Pepsi products have appeared in the Expressway convenience store and other Aramark-operated locations."Right now, in the C-store, there are Pepsi products," said Aramark District Manager Barbara Laverdiere.In 2000, Aramark signed a contract with Brandeis to become the new dining service provider.
