Edmonton Oilers win National Hockey League’s draft lottery to claim first overall pick in draft

The National Hockey League draft lottery took place Saturday night, and every non-playoff team had a chance to win the right to draft first overall on June 26.  The Buffalo Sabres and Arizona Coyotes actively spent this NHL season tanking to increase their chances of drafting consensus generational talent Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters.  They came into the draft with lottery odds of 20 percent and 13.5 percent, respectively.   As models of rebuilding franchises, these teams have been taking steps to surround whichever of McDavid or other generational talent—Boston University’s star center Jack Eichel—they had the privilege to draft.  Instead, the third-worst team in the NHL will now have the chance to draft McDavid.  The Edmonton Oilers won the draft lottery at 11 percent odds, and they will be selecting number one overall for the fourth time in the last six seasons.  With those other three first overall picks, the Oilers selected Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov, all skilled offensive players, and failed to focus on their defense through the draft at the number one position.  All of their selections since 2010 have been in the top 10, but the only defenseman drafted of those picks was Darnell Nurse, the nephew of NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb, at number seven overall.

Cain selected to represent Judges at regional All-Star game

Guard Hannah Cain ’15 of the women’s basketball team was selected to participate in the 2015 New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Senior All-Star Game last Tuesday night.  The captain and only senior on the team was also named to the All-University Athletic Association second team this past regular season.  The award was the second of her collegiate career, after she previously earned the achievement in her sophomore season. Cain was the all-around leader for the Judges this season.

Whitaker competes at NCAA Track and Field Championships

Kelsey Whitaker ’16 finished 17th in the mile run at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Whitaker’s last-place finish in the second heat was a bit of a disappointment, as she came into the event ranked ninth out of the 17 competitors and managed to finish 13th in last year’s one-mile run championship event.  Whitaker’s time of five minutes, 36.86 seconds was more than 20 seconds off the pace of the next-slowest time in the event and a substantial drop-off from Whitaker’s own season-best time of 5:00.90, which she ran less than a month ago at the New England Division III Championships.  That time netted her an impressive fourth-place finish in the event.

Cooper takes home another individual honor for the Judges

Forward Jordan Cooper ’18 was named the D3hoops.com All-Northeast Rookie of the Year yesterday, two weeks after being named University Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Year. The D3hoops.com All-Region teams are named from 711 nominated players nationwide, according to the website, made up of the nominations of various sports information directors across the country.  Cooper started in 21 of the Judges’ 25 games this season and made appearances in the other four.

University of Kentucky basketball team caps perfect regular season as March Madness looms closer

The University of Kentucky men’s basketball team defeated Florida University on Saturday 67-50 to finish their regular season undefeated and move to 31-0.  This marks the second time in program history that the team has gone undefeated in the regular season—after the Wildcats won every game in their 1953 to ’54 campaign—and the first time that a team from a major conference finished the regular season undefeated since the 1975 to ’76 Indiana Hoosiers.  The win on Saturday capped a dominant campaign for the Wildcats that included intense scrutiny from the first game of the season, when they defeated Grand Canyon University by 40 points.  From speculation about the NBA potential of the team’s star forwards Karl-Anthony Towns and Willie Cauley-Stein to comparisons to all-time great college basketball programs, the Wildcats overcame the pressure of consistent astronomical expectations to finish the season undefeated.  The Wildcats steamrolled through the rest of the first half of their schedule by beating fifth-ranked University of Kansas by 32, Montana State University by 58 and sixth-ranked University of Texas at Austin by 12.
