New England Patriots defeat Seattle Seahawks 28-24 to become Super Bowl XLIX Champions

 In the dying moments of Super Bowl XLIX, the New England Patriots seemed destined to lose.  The team found istelf backed up against its own goal line and desperately trying to  cling to a thin four-point lead over the defending champion Seattle Seahawks.  Less than two minutes after quarterback Tom Brady found wide receiver Julian Edelman in the end zone to take the lead, the Seahawks found themselves on the cusp of scoring after a marvelous tumbling catch.


Track & Field Meet Cancelled

The men and women’s track and field team was unable to run at the Smith College Beynon Invitational this past Saturday after the meet was canceled due to inclement weather. Host Smith College announced the cancellation in a press release, posted on its athletics website on Saturday morning.


New England Patriots win to set up Super Bowl matchup with defending champion Seattle Seahawks

The New England Patriots booked their trip to the team’s sixth Super Bowl appearance with a 45-7 dismantling of the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night.  With the victory, coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady became the coach and quarterback duo with the most number of visits to the championship game in NFL history. Brady went 23-for-35 on the day, throwing for 226 yards and three passing touchdowns.  Running back LeGarrette Blount ran for 148 yards and cashed in three scores of his own, including a 13-yard run with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter that made the score 38-7 and put the game out of reach. After the game, the often blunt Belichick had a simple message- “I only have one thing to say.


Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez among four elected to National Baseball Hall of Fame

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America elected four players to the National Baseball Hall of Fame last Tuesday, enshrining pitchers Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz and second baseman Craig Biggio in Cooperstown. Each of the three pitchers selected easily surpassed the necessary 75 percent of votes needed in their first appearance on the ballot. Johnson, known as the “Big Unit” for his six foot, 10 inch frame, got 97.3 percent of the vote.
