On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Brandeis Judges participated in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference tournament held at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The NEIFC is a league focused on supporting and developing intercollegiate fencing programs in and around New England. NEIFC hosts two tournaments each season. The first is the Fall Invitational usually held the first Saturday in November, and the Championship is usually held in late February.

Both the men’s and the women’s fencing teams struggled at the Duke University Invitational this weekend. The women’s team fell to all five teams they faced, while the men’s team secured one victory against Johns Hopkins University to counteract their four losses.

Brandeis’ Jack Allan ’20 in the 60-meter hurdles and the women’s 4x200-meter relay teams both broke Brandeis school records in their events at the Tufts University 2020 Cupid Invitational on Feb. 8 in Medford, MA.

The Judges snapped their three-game losing streak with a win against University Athletic Association rival Case Western Reserve University on Friday. Two days later, the Judges lost to Carnegie Mellon University, another UAA rival. These games bring the team record to 13–7 overall and 3–6 in the UAA.

On Saturday, the Brandeis men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams beat Clark University in their final dual meet of the 2019-2020 season. The meet was held at Clark University in Worcester, MA. The men won 142–110 over the Clark University Cougars and the women won 135–105. Overall, the Judges won 24 of the 32 events, dominating the Clark University Cougars.

The 25th ranked Brandeis men’s basketball team finished the first half of their conference schedule with a pair of wins against Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University.

The Brandeis women's basketball team lost both their home games this weekend in the Red Auerbach Arena. After dropping both games, the team is 12–6 overall and 2-5 in the University Athletic Association.

Super Bowl LIV was a contest between two powerful teams: the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes versus the San Francisco 49ers with their devastating defense, led by Rookie of the Year defensive end Nick Bosa. However, the contrast between the respective head coaches is also striking and, for many fans, seeing Andy Reid, the veteran and highly regarded head coach of the Chiefs, win his first Super Bowl was very gratifying. On Feb. 1, the Brandeis Judges hosted the Eric Sollee Invitational at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center. The women’s and men’s teams posted a 7–5 combined record with the women going 4–2 with and the men 3–3.

Eli Manning has announced retirement after spending 16 years as a quarterback for the New York Giants. The Louisiana native is the son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and the brother of former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning played college football at the University of Mississippi and was the first overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft. He was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers and was immediately traded to the New York Giants. Ernie Accorsi was the manager who traded for Manning, and in light of Manning’s retirement, Accorsi said, “that over a period of years he’s always going to be there. Those kinds of quarterback always give you a chance to win, and for 16 years, he did that for this franchise.”

Kobe Bean Bryant of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26 in Calabasas, California in a helicopter accident along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant. Kobe Bryant was 41-years-old. He was best known for the 20 years he spent as an American professional basketball player. With the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected Bryant from Lower Merion High School, and he was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Vlade Divac. He remained with the Lakers for his entire 20-year career, at the time a record.

The Brandeis University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams capped their Senior Day meet with a pair of wins on Jan. 18 at Wheaton College. The competition was held at Wheaton College because Brandeis’ Linsey Pool is undergoing renovations. The men’s team won 181–109 over the Keene State Owls and 178–96 over the Bridgewater State University Bears. The women were also victorious, with a sweep of 183–88 over Keene State and 195–82 over Bridgewater State. Overall, the Judges won 21 of the 32 events that took place that day.

After their blowout win against the University of Rochester and thrilling upset of Emory University last week, the Judges looked to continue their momentum in the Midwest. They suffered their fourth loss of the season in St. Louis on Friday night before escaping the University of Chicago in another down-to-the-wire finish.

The women’s basketball team has five University Athletic Association matchups under their belt. After splitting this weekend with one victory against the Washington University in St. Louis Bears and one loss against the University of Chicago Maroons, the team has a UAA record of 2–3. Overall, the team has a winning record of 12–4.
