The Brandeis Journalism Program and Office of the President sponsored “Science in a Pandemic: A Brandeis Journalism Forum" to discuss the role journalism has had on the public’s understanding of the pandemic and overall view of public health institutions. The virtual event, which took place on March 3, was a part of “Science Journalism, the Pandemic, and Disinformation,” a new course offered by the Journalism Program.

Academic travel largely stopped with the pandemic, and new remote meeting formats have increased accessibility and opened opportunities for worldwide collaboration in ways that were once impossible. As travel and in-person events start to become options again, scholars are questioning if returning to pre-pandemic 'normalcy' is the best choice.

The vexing issue of anonymous campus confessions pages, where students can anonymously submit posts for viewing by anyone who follows them on social media arose again over winter break. The confessions group associated with Brandeis is well known for being a forum for both anti-Jewish and racist sentiments. I’d share some examples, but I’d prefer not to share expletives.

Following the police killing of George Floyd and the subsequent resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in the mainstream this past May, the University made a commitment to address systemic racism on campus. After various announcements related to anti-racism, Zoom meetings with community members and guidance from the student organizers of the Black Action Plan, the University released a draft of its anti-racism plan in an email on Nov. 10. President Ron Liebowitz and Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Mark Brimhall-Vargas discussed the draft plan in a Nov. 10 joint interview with the Justice and The Brandeis Hoot.

The COVID-19 pandemic seemed to shut down the world of sports almost overnight. Many guessed that with so many months without any sports, when sports eventually started up again, they would be more popular than ever. That, however, has not seemed to be the case.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the challenges Brandeis community members with disabilities face. Formally beginning in the fall of 2018 with the letter to President Ron Liebowitz, followed by forums and working groups in 2019, members of the community have gathered together and petitioned for more attention to be given to this important issue.

As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, economists have been tracking the state of the global economy and predicting what the world will look like after the pandemic. Economist John Lipsky spoke to the Brandeis community about his research at a virtual event on Wednesday, Oct. 21. His talk was sponsored by the Brandeis International Business School and hosted by Provost Lisa Lynch and Prof. Steve Cecchetti (IBS). The event, titled “Policy Changes for the Post-pandemic Global Economy,” was a discussion of several key issues through an economic lens, from policy and management of the pandemic to the different progressions of the pandemic in developing versus developed countries.

Director of Programs in International Justice and Society at the Ethics Center Leigh Swigart and Assistant Director of ENACT and Communications for the Ethics Center David Weinstein spoke with the Justice on Oct. 16 about their role in the formation of the VoteDeis coalition, a nonpartisan campus initiative dedicated to ensuring all eligible students are registered and have a plan to vote.

COVID-19, which disproportionately affects communities of color and especially Black and Latinx communities, has further amplified and exposed racial disparities that the United States was built on. Black Americans today face the brunt of police violence in the time of COVID-19. George Floyd is an example of this — he died with COVID-19 antibodies in his blood, surviving infection only to die as a result of police brutality, according to an article from The New York Times.

In recent weeks, people all over the United States and around the world have been using their voices in a renewed call for racial justice. This board condemns anti-Black racism, as highlighted by recent incidents of police brutality, and is implementing concrete ways that we can address systemic racial inequity in our own organization.

The end of this year has brought countless unexpected obstacles, making it especially difficult to say goodbye to our seniors. Each of them has brought something special to the Justice, and we know they will bring their same strengths and passions to whatever it is they choose to pursue. Thank you to our seniors for all of your creative and thoughtful contributions to the Justice over the years.

The Student Union’s spring elections will be postponed until the Fall 2020 semester, according to an April 23 email to the community from Union President Simran Tatuskar ’21. This includes the race for Union president.

Brandeis University hosted a series of four Request for Proposal forums between Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5 in search of a new dining vendor. The University invited Sodexo, Harvest Table, Chartwells and Bon Appetit to present at these forums.
