When I stepped into the Women’s Studies Research Center last Wednesday, I was amazed by how stylish this exhibition was. My first impression of the decoration of this exhibition was the perfect blend of green with rustic and urban style.

One hundred years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, members of the Brandeis community came together to learn about women’s suffrage: how it was achieved, who it left out and how the fight is still being fought today. This event was held at the Women’s Studies Research Center’s “Womanhood Suffrage Teach-In: 72 Years in 72 Minutes” on Thursday.
The Center for German and European Studies partnered with Germany’s cultural institute, the Goethe Institut, to take part in a worldwide screening of Claude Lanzmann’s 9.5 hour documentary, Shoah (1985), on Monday. The screening, held on Holocaust Remembrance Day, fell on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the 35th anniversary of the documentary’s debut, according to the Institut.
Lisa Lynch will depart from her role as provost and executive vice-president of Academic Affairs by this summer, according to a Jan. 21 email to the Brandeis community from University President Ron Liebowitz. Lynch first stepped into the role in June 2016. According to the email, Lynch will be taking a year- long sabbatical and will then return to Brandeis to continue in her position as the Maurice B. Hexter Professor of Social and Economic Policy in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. Liebowitz wrote in the email that the process for selecting the next Provost will be announced shortly. The email did not specify why Lynch was stepping down.

The seventh Democratic debate on Tuesday marked the final debate before the Iowa caucus takes place and the race officially gets underway. It was befitting of the night that the debate was held in Iowa, which was no doubt a deliberate choice on the part of the DNC. Among the storylines which soaked up the most media attention in the leadup to the debate was a report that at a 2018 meeting between Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, Sanders told her he thought a woman could not win the presidency in the United States. After Sanders publicly denied the report, it set the stage for a contentious argument on debate night over what really happened at the meeting. Moreover, questions abounded over whether this story was deliberately leaked by the Warren campaign in the leadup to Iowa for political gain — as the meeting had taken place at least a year and a half prior to the debate — and whether one of the two was playing fast and loose with the facts. Overall though, it was a fairly uneventful debate with no clear winners of the night.
On display at the Dreitzer Art Gallery, located in Spingold Theater, are compositions created using a diverse array of artistic media. Why? The Fine Arts Department is sponsoring the Senior Mid-Year Exhibition, offering students the incredible opportunity to view the magnificent works of art created by the students in senior studio.

It might look small from the outside, but the collection it presents is not shabby at all. It’s also within five to 10 minutes of walking distance from most of the residence halls, so you can always check out their exhibits, even in the middle of the winter.
The University’s Board of Trustees held a retreat on Nov. 18 and 19 to discuss ongoing plans for Brandeis’ future. According to a December email to the community from Brandeis President Ron Liebowitz, the main topics the Board discussed were infrastructure improvements, Brandeis’ brand positioning among other higher education institutions and how the University has responded to the negative results of the recently administered Campus Climate Survey.

The Rose Art Museum certainly has a lot of unique art works. Upon visiting the museum, I saw a lot of designs and objects, such as sponges, that I wouldn’t really expect to be used in art. One piece that I was really drawn to was the “Untitled” (1972) by Joe Overstreet.
The damsel in distress, the cold villainess and the femme fatale: these are all popular tropes that female characters tend to fall into. Rarely do we see a nuanced role for women because most stories are not told by women. This made Eurydice a breath of fresh air.
The Club Cantonese @ Brandeis presented their annual culture show on Friday in Levin Ballroom. The theme of this year’s culture show was “Tsum Zao Seoi Yuet,” which means “looking for Cantonese Culture through time” in Cantonese. C2B chose this title because it represents the many different cultures and traditions that make up Cantonese culture and shows the progression of them through time.
