Resist Trump’s attacks on American freedom of the press

(01/24/17 4:49am)

In his most recent press-related tantrum, President Donald Trump called journalists “among the most dishonest human beings on earth” in response to their inauguration crowd estimates, according to a Jan. 21 New York Times article. While White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s insistence that Friday saw “the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period,” despite evidence otherwise, seems almost laughable, the president’s continued attacks on press credibility and his ever-growing vendetta should be more cause for concern than laughter.

Squad takes two of three to break .500

(12/06/16 12:53am)

The Brandeis men’s basketball team had a very promising week, as they took home two hard-fought wins over a long week of play. The team beat the Salem State University Vikings and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs but lost by just two points against the undefeated Tufts University Jumbos. Through the beginning of the basketball season, the squad has shown that it is prepared to work hard and has the grit needed to succeed in its conference.

Judges cross final finish line in championship meet

(11/21/16 10:48pm)

The past two weeks have been busy but successful for the men and women’s cross-country teams as their season concluded on Saturday.  Both the men and women sent one of their players to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. For the women, Emily Bryson ’19 earned the second All-American honor of her career at Nationals, as she finished 24th overall. For the men, Ryan Stender ’18 just barely missed his first All-American award, finishing in 37th. The week before, the teams participated in the NCAA New England Regional Championships in Westfield, Massachusetts where the men finished 9th overall and the women 6th.  On the women’s side, Bryson improved immensely from the previous season, as she finished a commendable seven spots ahead of last year’s race. She came in a respectable 31st the year before and improved her time by an amazing 34 seconds with a time of 21:09.9. After the race, Bryson explained her mentality: “I just kept thinking of all my girls, my team; that’s all I thought about. I gave it everything.”

Young talent leads the way in NFL first half

(11/14/16 10:04pm)

The first half of this year’s NFL season has come to an end and not in the way that many had expected.  While the New England Patriots have dominated the AFC East standings in routine fashion, despite a brief interlude of quarterback drama, the defending champions Denver Broncos sit in third place in the AFC West.  Furthermore, the reigning NFC champion Carolina Panthers currently sit at a dismal 3-5 overall record and are in dead last in the NFC South.

DeRozan’s efficiency takes league by storm

(11/14/16 10:04pm)

It’s popular to begin an article on the Toronto Raptors by saying they don’t get talked about a lot. As much as I would like to avoid what has become a cliché sentiment surrounding this team, the fact is, it’s true. Even with a run to the Eastern Conference Finals last season and some high profile Drake fandom, the Raptors still have flown under the radar in every season in recent basketball memory.

Resist Dakota Access Pipeline’s disregard for Sioux sovereignty

(11/08/16 6:38am)

A section of the Dakota Access Pipeline sits above ground in North Dakota, crossing the Missouri River at the northern border of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. As the Army Corps of Engineers prepares to lower the pipeline into the Earth, it faces fierce opposition from protesters who fear water contamination and also want the historically sacred space to be respected, according to a Nov. 1 New York Times article. The protests at Standing Rock are unique in receiving national attention because of their scale, but they are emblematic of larger issues with the way the national government views Native Americans and the reservation system as resources we need not invest in yet can put to our use when it is opportune to do so. The Army Corps of Engineers must heed suggestions to move the Dakota Access Pipeline not only to maintain clean water and preserve sacred Sioux land but also to send a message — that in 2016 we are finally done taking from those who were here before us.

Men’s loss snaps long win streak

(11/07/16 9:57pm)

The men’s soccer team wrapped up their up-and-down season on Saturday with another scoreless loss, this one coming against New York University. The loss snaps the Judges’ incredible five-game winning streak, yet the team was able to secure a national playoff berth all the same. The Judges were on the fence going into the month, but with their sudden offensive reversal, the team has managed to slide into the National Collegiate Athletic Assocation playoff bracket. With a five game win streak in the bitter cold, the team was able to secure a resounding winning record for the reuglar season.
