Roy Moore didn’t see this one coming. Moore, the leading candidate and lone Republican in Alabama’s Senate race decried multiple allegations of sexual assault and misconduct on minors as “a desperate attempt to stop [his] campaign” but did not outright deny dating teenagers while in his 30s, according to a Nov. 11 CNN article. Following the public downfalls of actor Kevin Spacey and comedian Louis “C.K.” Székely in the face of alleged sexual misconduct in just the past two weeks, it seems 2017 is bringing skeletons out of closets all across the American public consciousness. However, where Spacey and Székely have been publicly lambasted and forced to offer apologies of varying candor, Moore has fired back at accusers and pledged to supporters that he “Will never give up the fight,” according to a Nov. 11 Washington Post report. As Moore’s campaign rolls on, defended by Alabama voters, we must question why we hold entertainers to moral standards but let politicians off the hook. If we find sexual assault and misconduct universally detestable, don’t these crimes deserve universal condemnation?

It is no secret that celebrities have won over our attention; they fill us with joy, make us weep at our television screens and run our bank accounts thin with their new releases. Most importantly, though, they can compel us to listen. Beyoncé, for example, has a name that is almost universally known. While the icon has a slew of accolades, one of the most relevant now is her commitment to social justice. From her 2014 Video Music Awards medley performance proudly proclaiming herself as a feminist to her 2016 music video “Formation,” which brought attention to the rampant police violence in our society, Beyoncé has illustrated why it is important for celebrities to speak out.

A Feb. 13 article in Vanity Fair reported that two of President Donald Trump’s top advisers, his son-in-law Jared Kushner and former campaign chair Steve Bannon, were getting along very well. Kushner even went so far as to propose knocking down the wall that separated his office with that of the notorious right-wing agitator. The report was met with widespread surprise as the backgrounds of the two would lead one to assume that they would be diametrically opposed to one another.

In his most recent press-related tantrum, President Donald Trump called journalists “among the most dishonest human beings on earth” in response to their inauguration crowd estimates, according to a Jan. 21 New York Times article. While White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s insistence that Friday saw “the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period,” despite evidence otherwise, seems almost laughable, the president’s continued attacks on press credibility and his ever-growing vendetta should be more cause for concern than laughter.

Tina Fey’s spot-on impression of former Governor Sarah Palin on the Jan. 23 episode of “Saturday Night Live” highlighted three main things about Palin. First, she has the potential to be an amazing freestyle rapper if politics doesn’t work out. How brilliant was “right wingin’ bitter clingin’ proud clingers of our guns our God and our religions”? Second, she knows exactly how to stir the American public: mentioning ISIS and promising to kick ass.
