We’re halfway into the 2020s, and so far it has been a decade defined by throwbacks — Y2K fashion is coming out of exile, the 90s are making a reappearance, and — for this review — most importantly, 2010s indie sleaze is back with a vengeance. We saw The Dare suddenly emerge as a new artist to follow in 2024, followed by an onslaught of similar — yet not derivative — bands in his wake: Bassvictim, MGNA Crrrta, The Truth, 2hollis — and, most importantly, The Hellp. The Hellp have been around since 2021, making music drenched in muddy synths, angular drumming and glitchy production that creates a musical experience that, yes, harkens back to the indie sleaze artists of the 2010s (LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes and MGMT, to name a few) but is all the same fresh and intriguing. “Riviera” will be the third album the band has released, and it has a lot to live up to: at their best, the musical chaos that so defines The Hellp’s discography is elevated into something beautifully transcendent — but at their worst, the chaotic nature of The Hellp leads to something undefined and messy. “Riviera” is proving to be an album that might not be that simple to define — for better or for worse.
Her authorship of “The Thanksgiving Play,” alongside a myriad of feats of great theatrical grandeur, such as an adaptation of Peter Pan on Broadway, makes Larissa Fasthorse more than worthy of our praise and recognition through the Brandeis Creative Arts Award. The Award has been previously granted to notable figures including Leonard Bernstein, Charles Chaplin and Stephen J. Sondheim, with our newest recipient showing her might on equal footing. Fasthorse’s ceremony was held in the afternoon of November 21, 2025 and soon thereafter, she would attend the opening night for the Brandeis Theater Arts Department’s production of “The Thanksgiving Play.”
“Only Murders in the Building,” Hulu’s murder-mystery comedy starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, has been a favorite of mine since it was first released in 2021. It has tight, consistent humor, a quirky ensemble, unexpected celebrity cameos and most of all, outstanding mysteries. Each episode, new details are revealed: a shocking twist or a new piece of evidence that makes the viewer wonder how they hadn’t seen a critical clue and constantly shifted suspicions between a host of equally likely suspects. For four seasons, I was excited to turn on the television every week to get a step closer to figuring it out, and to see if I could piece together the puzzle before the characters in the show did — and even if I didn’t, the “whodunit” answer still felt like a satisfying conclusion each season.
It is common knowledge that producing an adaptation from novel to screen perfectly is nearly impossible. This is no exception with Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” (2025) starring Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac. While each actor put on an amazing performance and encompassed the souls of each of their characters successfully, there was so much lost when del Toro adapted Mary Shelley’s novel of the same name into a movie. First published in 1818, Shelley’s novel is an enduring classic which has fascinated us for centuries. Shelley’s writing, while it may seem confusing at first, is a beautiful representation of what it is to grapple with narcissism and man’s constant reach for greatness. She created a character, Victor Frankenstein, that houses so much nuance within him and leaves us — the readers — grasping for more. We are urged on with every page and wonder who is the true villain of this story, all the while unknowingly falling in love with the creature Frankenstein creates. This is where my greatest critique of this new movie lies — there is no room for us to consider how much or how little we want to believe in these characters. The movie hits the nail on the head, too obviously showing us that we need to believe Frankenstein is the real monster. While the choice to make every death directly at the hands of Frankenstein instead of at the hands of the creature is gripping at first glance, it takes away the joy of realizing that the Creature isn’t really at fault for these murders. The real culprit is Frankenstein, whose desire for power fuels the creation of the creature, but Frankenstein’s choice to push his creation away forces the creature to choose a life of violence. What I am trying to get at is the obvious lack of nuance within these characters and the lack of subtlety with their actions. The nuance and creativity is one of the most important parts of Shelley’s novel, and without, it the movie feels lackluster.
Since August 2025, artist Danielle Joy Mckinney has been the Rose Art Museum’s artist in residence. Her exhibit “Tell Me More” will be touring until January 2026, and the Rose is Mckinney’s first ever solo museum exhibit, featuring 13 of her pieces with two being exclusive to just the Rose Art Museum.
On Wednesday, Oct. 29, University President Arthur Levine ’70 spoke to a crowd of undergraduates about the Brandeis Plan to Reinvent the Liberal Arts. He touched on the plan’s three major facets: reorganizing the graduate and undergraduate schools, remaking the core curriculum and creating a Center for Careers and Applied Liberal Arts. The event took place in Rapaporte Treasure Hall and featured small presentations from Levine, as well as members of the faculty and administration involved with the project.

Brandeis boasts a wide variety of intramural sports, ranging from traditional sports, such as tennis and volleyball, to more unique ones, such as IM poker and water battleship. There are approximately 30 intramural leagues and tournaments, all of which welcome Brandeis students, faculty and staff to participate.
Welcome back, Brandesians, to the second edition of The Opinion. In the previous edition, I discussed the intensity of University clubs — with many clubs mirroring today’s politics and stressors, which many students prefer to avoid. I argued that clubs should be taken less seriously not only for the betterment of students’ mental health, but also to improve campus culture as a whole. Today’s opinion will tackle a topic that I have heard discussed in the library numerous times.
I’ve recently set about collecting data that might give me a peek into the general personality of Brandeis students. For this study, I used the “Big Five personality traits” framework because it’s one of the most frequently used models of measuring personality. It observes all personalities as having varying levels of the same five traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. These traits are defined by Mark Dziak in his article, “Big Five personality traits.” Openness is defined as “a person’s willingness to engage with novel ideas and experiences.” Extraversion is “marked by sociability and assertiveness.” Conscientiousness is one’s tendency to be “organized and goal-oriented.” Agreeableness is one’s tendency to be “kind and empathetic” towards others. Finally, neuroticism is “associated with emotional instability and anxiety.”
As Brandeis goes through numerous changes over the years — whether in its infrastructure, its administration or its student body — certain truths about the character of the University remain the same. One of those truths is that its academics comprise a diverse collection of talented and dedicated instructors who teach classes that change our lives indelibly.
How lucky we are to not have our life planned for us. How privileged am I to have self-determination, to become whatever I wish. Generations of women before me did not have self-autonomy — their fate was decided for them. And yet, here I am, a liberated woman of the 21st century, and I tremble with fear at my own power to make whatever I wish of myself.
Despite having grown up fascinated with the sea, a budding patron of the water as a coastal Californian child, I have never been able to shake my innate fear of it.
On March 28 Zac Gondelman ’26, was named a 2025 Truman Scholar. From a pool of 743 candidates, Gondelman was selected through a rigorous application process that involved recommendations from distinguished leaders to join the cohort of 54 students selected nationwide. He will be the 12th Brandeis student to receive this fellowship, and the second chosen in a row. Gondelman is pursuing a major in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, with minors in Politics and Religious Studies. He is currently studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark.
On April 24, 2025 at 2:30pm, The Rose Art Museum invited students to perform their poetry in conversation with Hugh Hayden’s exhibition, “Home Work.” I arrived ten minutes early, setting aside my belongings. Student poets dressed in flurries of flowery patterns and spring colors were scattered in the Museum, reciting their poems and practicing silently to themselves as I wandered through the exhibition. I made my way to the entrance to await the formal start of the tour. I found a stack of booklets titled “After Hugh Hayden” that was a chapbook collection of all the student poems
As a prospective student, I was told Brandeis would be a place to explore my Jewish identity. Quickly, I learned I was a lesser member of the community than the legitimate Jewish students — the ones who grew up going to Jewish day schools and went to Israel during their gap years. I was an aberration, a Jew who felt no connection to Israel and wasn’t particularly interested in making one.

On the evening of May 31, Senator Cory Booker (D) of New Jersey began a 25-hour marathon speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate. He stated, “I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able. I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisis.” He held the floor in protest of the Trump administration’s actions and Elon Musk’s interference in various critical government functions, such as social safety nets, via the Department of Government Efficiency.
