I think every debate about the legality of new sports technology tends to come down to whether or not they give a significant advantage to the players who use them. In this case, I feel like this is more of an “I’m going to do it because I can” type of thing. The clubs you use can only help so much, especially when conforming to the PGA’s strict regulations. To be clear, it makes no difference to me whether he uses 3D-printed equipment or not. The clubs, to some extent, act more as a publicity stunt than anything else. DeChambeau does a lot of what he does simply for the exposure: carrying around a signpost at the Master’s, running a YouTube channel for the love of the game, you name it. I think Bryson is mostly hedging; he’d be happy to use some cutting-edge new clubs designed just for him, but more than that, he wants people to talk about his clubs. If he does well, his haters get to raise a stink about the clubs, and he gets more attention. If DeChambeau sells dupes of his custom irons like he says he will, then I’ll be fully on Ashhwika’s side. They’re not built for anyone besides DeChambeau, so I see no point in switching to them, especially if they’ll set you back as much as or more than a new set of top-of-the-line clubs would. For the moment, I’m just gonna keep pretending like DeChambeau doesn’t exist. Good take, Ashhwika!
