Let it never be said that the life of a Disney starlet is that of a Disney princess. On Tuesday, Disney star Demi Lovato left her international concert tour with the Jonas Brothers to check herself into a treatment center, seeking treatment for "emotional and physical issues."
Later that day, TMZ posted a statement from Demi's rep. "Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help," the rep says. "She is doing just that. Demi and her family ask that the media please respect their privacy during this difficult time. She regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future." While the rep did not specifically address Demi's problems, a source close to the family told People magazine, "She was bullied in school. She fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting. . Demi is taking control by getting help."
As they often do in situations like this, rumors began swirling as to the catalyst of Demi's decision to enter a treatment center (note: not rehab, Demi's rep would like us to know). Many suspect that her nonstop work schedule may have reached a breaking point when Demi's ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas brought his new girlfriend, Twilight star Ashley Greene, along for the ride. Demi's fans flooded to Ashley's Twitter page, accusing her of causing Demi's breakdown. Others wondered if it was her high-profile fight with a backup dancer last week, suspected to have started when the dancer threatened to reveal Demi's long-suspected partying lifestyle to the public (which would almost certainly ruin her clean and innocent Disney image). Others thought she may have just jinxed herself-two weeks prior to checking into the treatment center, Demi had said in an interview that she was proud of her squeaky-clean track record, free of the scandals that had brought down Lindsay Lohan.
Whatever the cause of Demi's decision to enter treatment, she seems to be going about it the right way. A source close to the family told People on Wednesday, "Demi is not receiving care at one of the Hollywood-type centers. . She is at a real facility that specializes in helping adolescent and adult women with the type of issues she has battled."
A Disney starlet who not only opens up about her problems but also deals with them responsibly? That's what I call a role model. Lindsay, take note.
