Ex-couple Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey are engaged-just not to each other. You might remember Nick and Jessica's brief television show, Newlyweds. As reality shows went, it was fairly low-key, but it convinced millions of viewers (my high school self included) that they were the definition of true love. When the couple split in 2005, viewers were devastated and many hoped they'd reconcile. No such luck.
On Nov. 4, Nick announced that he was officially engaged to Vanessa Minnillo, his girlfriend since 2006, putting a definitive end to the rumors that she was just a very long-term rebound fling.
Unlike Nick, though, who has been steady with Vanessa for almost 4 years, Jessica has been going through boyfriends like movie rentals since her split with Nick. As the names kept coming from all sides of the "things-to-be-famous-for" spectrum (John Mayer and Tony Romo?), Jessica's fans began to worry that she'd never find another man to settle down with.
But on Nov. 14, Jessica announced that she, too, was engaged, to boyfriend Eric Johnson. The two have been dating for 5 to 7 months, depending on whom you ask (the relationship was confirmed in July, but rumors had been swirling since May), which for normal people is very quick to go from strangers to engagers, but hey, this is Hollywood.
As much as we'd all like to be happy for the future Mrs. Johnson, it does seem a little fishy. Getting engaged barely 2 weeks after your ex-husband announces his engagement? When asked last month if Eric was the one, Jessica told People magazine, "I never go to that, because I already went there, so, I'm not going to jinx my own self. He's the one for me right now! I'm very happy, I'm in a great place, and if right now could last forever, I'd take it." Those are pretty good words of praise, but they are not necessarily the words of a woman hoping for a ring.
Even though the Internet is swirling with rumors that Jess' engagement was her idea rather than Eric's, an attempt to not get too behind her ex, Jessica expressed heartfelt wishes for Nick and Vanessa. "I don't know where all these rumors came from," she told People. "Our relationship was over a really long time ago, so it would be nice if everybody could move on with us and really just celebrate the love between him and Vanessa."
Ouch, Jess. Way to twist the knife.
