Celebrity marriages. Do they ever last? This week brought us news of not one, not two, not three but four major celebrity breakups. Something in the water, maybe?
On Oct. 11, TMZ announced that Courteney Cox and David Arquette had separated after 11 years of marriage-and that the separation has been in place for "several months." Later that day, the couple released a statement saying, "We have agreed to a trial separation that dates back for some time. The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves. . We remain best friends and responsible parents to our daughter, and we still love each other dearly." As the story developed, however, news surfaced that they have been living in an "open marriage" for the past several months. Cox, 46, was linked to Cougar Town co-star Brian Van Holt, and Arquette, 39, has been spotted out and about behaving like a very single man.
Just a day later, Christina Aguilera announced that she, too, is going solo. A source close to the singer told Us Magazine that the singer and her husband, Jordan Bratman, "have been separated for a few months." However, "They were very much in love," the insider explained, "but over the last few months, it became clear that they were more like friends than husband and wife." Last Thursday, TMZ reported that Aguilera has indeed filed for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences." According to the documents, there is a prenuptial agreement, and the petition seeks to terminate Bratman's ability to get spousal support. Aguilera is also seeking joint physical and legal custody of the couple's only child, Max, 2.
But wait, there's more! Last Wednesday, Glee star Jessalyn Gilsig filed for divorce from her husband, Bob Salomon. Gilsig, 39, filed papers in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Like Aguilera, she cited irreconcilable differences for the split. According to TMZ, the former couple plans to enter into a "private marital settlement" which will "divide all community assets and obligations," as well as a custody arrangement for their daughter, Penelope, 4. The couple would have celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in January.
Furthermore, last Wednesday, Colin Farrell split with Polish actress Alicja Bachleda-Curus, the mother of Farrell's son, Henry.
Clearly, this is not a good week to be a couple in Hollywood.
