In the men's tennis team's opening dual match of the season, the team achieved a 7-2 victory against the United States Coast Guard Academy last Friday. In the win against Coast Guard, Simon Miller '11 won in both singles and doubles play. After winning 8-5 alongside partner Nick White '11 at first doubles, Miller won 6-4, 6-2 at the second singles position.

Miller was excited about being choosen as the athlete of the week but said that everyone on the team has been playing well.

"It's an honor to receive this award for the second time in my collegiate career, but I would say that the guys on the tennis team all deserve recognition," Miller said

In Miller's three years at Brandeis, he has gone 41-35 in singles play and 32-39 in doubles.

He won 12 singles matches in his first two seasons on the team, but last year, Miller posted his best record in singles, going 17-10.

Miller has had success in the team's play this season, especially in doubles. In the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England Regional Championships at Williams College Sept. 24 and 25, Miller and White reached the quarterfinals in doubles. However, they lost their quarterfinal match to the Amherst College doubles team of junior Wes Waterman and senior Moritz Koenig 8-5.

Miller and the rest of the men's tennis team will look to lead Brandeis in the James Wallach Invitational at Bates College, coach Ben Lamanna's alma mater, in Lewiston, Maine this upcoming weekend.

"We've all been working extremely hard on and off the court to become the nationally ranked team we are today," Miller said. "I know that our stock is only rising.
