Athlete of the Week: Charles Sacks '11
The golf team's season is over, but Charles Sacks '11 ended the year on a high note.In the Unviersity Athletic Association Championships on Sunday and Monday, Sacks tied for fifth, shooting a 10-over-par 154. In the second round, he shot an even 72, which was the third-lowest round score in the tournament.
Before the UAA Championships, the members of the golf team ended the regular season at the Worcester State College Invitational on Tuesday the same way they started it: with a third-place finish.
Sacks finished in a tie for seventh place out of 78 competitors, shooting a four-over-par 76. It was his fifth top-10 finish and tenth score in the sought-after 70s range this season.
The key to becoming a competitive collegiate golfer lies both in skill and mindset, and one source of Sacks' development has been in his approach to the game. A familiar mantra has become a philosophy of sorts for Sacks.
"'One shot at a time' is the best way to become more consistent," said Sacks, "just because you never have to worry about anything except for the next shot."
The third place finish out of 16 teams at the Worcester State College Invitatioal marked the Judges' best finish in their 12 tournaments.
"We've set our expectations higher, . and I think that's why we're starting to play much better," said Sacks.
While the focus of golf may be on the individual player, Sacks noted that cohesion is a defining element of the team, and it has played an important role in their success.
"I feel like every year this team has been pretty close together. [We] just have the right group of guys right now. . Everybody's getting their games on. Everybody's working pretty hard at it.
