Constitutional Review Committee holds fourth town hall meeting
The Student Union Constitutional Review Committee held its fourth town hall meeting last Tuesday. The meeting was open to all members of the Brandeis community and provided an opportunity to inquire about the nature of the committee and to make proposals to improve the committee's effectiveness. Members of the review committee addressed student questions about secured organizations and the more efficient ways to obtain and report finances.
The committee, made up of current students and alumni, is tasked with reviewing and recommending pertinent changes to the existing version of the Student Union constitution.
Committee chair Jessica Steinberg '10 opened the meeting by clarifying the definition of a secured organization: "A secured organization is essential to the main goals and purpose of the university and student body."
The committee will consider a proposal from Student Sexuality Information Services to be secured.
A Brandeis Emergency Medical Corps representative addressed the difficulties the organization faces in dealing with finances in relation to both Brandeis and the community at large. "BEMCo is both a student club and ambulance corps that must report to both Finance Board and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. . They will be looking for efficient ways to report to the Finance Board and efficient ways to get funding," the representative said.
As per committee practices, after the town hall portion of the meeting was complete, the meeting was closed and all those present apart from committee members were asked to leave.
