Track & Field: Both squads compete at Greater Boston Track Club
Grayce Selig '11 qualified for New England Division III Championships in the 1-mile Championship, and several runners finished in top spots as the Brandeis men's and women's indoor track and field teams wrapped up a successful meet at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard Sunday. The meet was a change of pace for the Brandeis squads. While most of their competitions are team meets against other schools, this meet was more geared toward individual competition.
"There were other schools there, but there were also a significant number of unaffiliated runners who were very competitive," captain Lucia Capano '11 said.
The majority of the squad's successes came on the women's side. The best team performance was delivered in the 800-meter run, where Brandeis finished three of the top four runners.
Erin Bisceglia '12 finished first with a time of 2 minutes, 20.66 seconds. Emily Owen '11 finished third with a time of 2:21.60, while Marie Lemay's '12 time of 2:22.16 was good for fourth.
"They all ran great races," said Capano. "It was really exciting watching them round the final curve with all three of them pulling away."
But the most noteworthy individual performance of the day was Selig's. Selig finished in fourth place in the 1-mile championship with a time of 5:00.53.
The time was her personal best, and easily qualified her for the New England Division III Championships.
She surpassed the 5:05 time necessary to qualify, and was five seconds off of automatically qualifying for nationals.
"I definitely think that she can and will reach that time," Capano said.
Coach John Evans was also pleased with Selig's performance.
"[Selig] had another great run," Evans said. "She's in great shape. ... I think she is going to have a tough rest of the season. ... I think she will run much faster in the next couple of weeks."
Captain Beth Pisarik '10 also ran the 1-mile championship, finishing ninth with a time of 5:27.46.
In the regular mile event, Kate Warwick '12 finished third with a time of 5:18.31, while captain Ally Connolly '10 finished tenth with a time of 5:27.46.
Anna Sinjour '13 led the girls' sprinters on Sunday. Sinjour finished the 200-meter run in 27.14 seconds, good for seventh place.
Sinjour also paced Brandeis runners in the 400-meter race, finishing in third place.
Michelle Gellman '11 finished fifth with a time of 1:02.30, just 1 second behind Sinjour's time.
In the high jump, captain Suzanne Bernier '10 finished in fourth place with a height of 1.57 meters. Lily Parenteau '12 finished fifth with a height of 1.52 meters.
Capano excelled in the long jump and the high jump. In the long jump, she finished in third with a distance of 5.36 meters.
Her triple jump distance of 11.24 meters was good for fourth place in the event.
In the shot put, Desiree Murphy '10 finished in fourth with a distance of 9.71 meters.
On the men's side, the Judges were paced by their distance runners.
Alex Kramer '13 had the highest finish of any men's runner, finishing third in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:22.78.
Marc Boutin '12 finished in 4:28.56, good for ninth in the event.
In the 3,000-meter event, Daniel Anastos '11 finished sixth in the invitational with a time of 8:44.88.
Mingkai Lin '12 and Brian Foley '13 led the sprint events for the men's team.
Lin finished eleventh in the 200-meter run place with a time of 24.02. Foley led Brandeis in the 400 with a fourth-place finish.
Overall, Capano was pleased with the team's performance on Sunday.
"We just wanted to come out and practice and see how high in the rankings we can get, and I think we all did a great job of that this weekend," she said.
The men's and women's indoor track and field sqauds will next compete in the Terrier Classic at Boston University Saturday.
