Welcome back to school, Brandeisians! While we were all off vacationing and caroling and eating Chinese food on Christmas, Hollywood was, as usual, filled with all sorts of drama and excitement.Starting off with the good news: December and January have been absolutely filled with Hollywood babies! Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bündchen welcomed a baby boy on Dec. 8 and named him Benjamin Brady on Dec. 18. Former Girls Next Door star Kendra Wilkinson gave birth to baby boy Hank Baskett IV on Dec. 11. On Christmas Eve, Scrubs star Sarah Chalke gave birth to a son, Charlie Rhodes Afifi. Matthew McConaughey and girlfriend Camila Alves welcomed daughter Vida Alves McConaughey on Jan. 3. On Jan. 11 Mark Wahlberg and Rhea Durham welcomed baby number four, Grace Margaret Wahlberg.
Now for the bad news. While there was a baby boom, Hollywood also said some good-byes during our break. Roy Disney, son and nephew of The Walt Disney Co. founders, passed away on Dec. 18. On Dec. 20 Clueless and Girl, Interrupted actress Brittany Murphy went into full cardiac arrest, and paramedics were unable to revive her; she was 32. Johnson & Johnson heiress Casey Johnson was found dead in Los Angeles on Jan. 4, and her death sparked a media frenzy of catfights and harsh words between Johnson's family and friends and her fiancée, reality star Tila Tequila.
And then the ugly. Professional golfer Tiger Woods came into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons when mistress after mistress started coming forward in early December. He lost his corporate sponsorship from Gatorade and on Dec. 11 announced that he was taking an "indefinite break" from golf. His wife, Elin Nordegren, hired a divorce lawyer on Dec. 16. While Tiger seems to be trying to get back into the world's good graces by donating money to earthquake relief in Haiti, the consensus seems pretty clear. To paraphrase Beyoncé: If you liked it, you never should have cheated on it.
So there you have it: the good, the bad and the ugly of What You Missed While You Were On Vacation. Here's to a fabulous semester of Hollywood drama-and maybe a few good movies to go with it.
