Housing will not be offered to JBS students
Students who apply and are accepted to Justice Brandeis Semester programs for either fall 2010 or spring 2011 will not be eligible for on-campus housing during the program but will be eligible for housing during the other semester, according to Director of the Department of Community Living Jeremy Leiferman.According to the 2010 Room Selection Guide, accessible through the Brandeis University Web site, "Students enrolled in a Justice Brandeis Semester for fall are not eligible for on-campus housing during the fall semester, but may request housing for the spring semester. Students enrolling in a Justice Brandeis Semester for spring may live on-campus for the fall semester."
When asked where students who are enrolled in JBS programs are expected to live, Leiferman wrote in his e-mail to the Justice that "it will be determined by each student and will be dependent on their programs." Although no JBS programs have been finalized for fall 2010 or spring 2011, at least some of the programs will take place outside of the Boston area, according to JBS Director Alyssa Grinberg, who wrote in an e-mail to the Justice that "other programs take place outside of [the greater Boston] region." This means that students enrolled in those programs will not be seeking on-campus housing, said Leiferman.
The University is currently accepting applications for JBS programs in the summer of 2010 but has not introduced programs or application deadlines for JBS programs during the 2010 to 2011 academic year.
Leiferman said, "Part of the reason that the JBS program was conceived was to help to alleviate some of the on-campus crowding in multiple ways; housing, dining, mailboxes, classroom spaces, all of that."
The idea of the JBS was first posited by a subcommittee of the Curriculum and Academic Restructuring Steering committee in early 2009.
According to the Web site for the JBS programs, "A Justice Brandeis Semester (JBS) is an engaging, immersive academic program in which small groups of students explore a thematic topic through inquiry-based courses linked to real-world experiential opportunities."
Students who choose to enroll in a JBS program for fall 2010 will have the same options for housing during the spring semester as students who are returning to campus from study abroad programs, said Leiferman.
Students generally have "quite a few options for housing," continued Leiferman.
Leiferman also said that students who choose to participate in summer JBS programs will be able to live on campus for the duration of the program. "Summer JBS program [participants] will be able to live on campus. . [students taking part in] Programs during the academic year won't be able to [live on campus]," he said.
