Women's Soccer: Rosenzweig '10 sets two school records
As the clock wound down in the women's soccer team's game against No. 16 University of Chicago last Sunday, goalie Hillary Rosenzweig '10 was getting closer to adding two personal milestones to her athletic résumé. The Judges led 2-0 and closed out the victory to give Rosenzweig her 20th career shutout and 35th career victory in net, both of which became new Brandeis records."I'm so proud of her, and she saves our butt so many times, so she's great," defender Taryn Martiniello '11 said of Rosenzweig.
The Judges' win was their first win against a ranked opponent this season after losing to No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis 2-0 last Friday night. With the home weekend split, the team's record stands at 8-6-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the UAA.
Rosenzweig passed the all-time wins mark of Natasha Pieciak '08, who set the record between 2002 and 2004 before leaving the team to join the military after her junior season. Pieciak returned to Brandeis in 2008 to earn her degree.
Rosenzweig's 20th shutout surpassed the former record of 18 held by Justine McBride's '92. Rosenzweig earned the shutout with eight saves, including several diving stops in the first half.
"It's wonderful she set the record," coach Denise Dallamora said. "It's been a while since the record was set. She's done a great job, an excellent job in her four years. She's had a great four year career."
In the course of last Sunday's game, Dallamora made a key lineup change to light a fire under the team after it came out "flat" to start the game. Dallamora decided to swap the positions of forwards Tiffany Pacheco '11 and Melissa Gorenkoff '10.
"We switched [Pacheco's] and [Gorenkoff]'s role, because we weren't winning the air balls in the middle," Dallamora said. "I think [Pacheco] did a little better job with that, and then [Gorenkoff] did a great job wing-side of getting [the] ball inline instead of serving balls in."
The move paid off, as the Judges scored two goals later in the first half and held on in the second half for a 2-0 win over their UAA rival. "I was playing outside [midfielder], and [Gorenkoff] was playing [forward], and we switched halfway through the first half," Pacheco said of the switch. "As a midfielder you go more to defense than to score, but at forward you kind of play more up on the attack, so we switched."
Brandeis got its first goal of the game in the 33rd minute, when Gorenkoff crossed the ball to midfielder Sofia Vallone '11, who was waiting in front of the net and struck the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
Pacheco was pleased with Gorenkoff's crosses during the game.
"[Gorenkoff] can cross the ball really well from the outside. That's one of her strong points, and we capitalized on two balls that she crossed," Pacheco said.
The second Judges goal came less than seven minutes later, when Maroons sophomore goalie Emma Gormley misplayed a ball in front of the net, leaving the upper portion of the net open for Pacheco to score her seventh goal of the season.
Chicago outshot the Judges 8-4 in the second half but was unable to put any balls into the net. Dallamora warned her team at halftime not to get overconfident even though the team had not given up more than two goals in a game all season.
"In soccer, two goals is the kiss of death, so let's not be complacent, so get out there and play hard," Dallamora told the team at halftime.
The Judges' win was especially important as the season comes to a close with an NCAA Tournament bid still in the team's sights.
"This win was huge. They were 16th in the country," Pacheco said. "It just shows to everyone in New England that we deserve to be in NCAAs, and we can beat any team that's put in front of us."
On Friday night, the Judges outshot the Bears 15-13 yet still came away with the 2-0 home loss. The Bears scored once in each half, the first coming on a 40-yard blast from sophomore back Natalie Callaghan in the 34th minute and the second by senior midfielder Becca Heymann off a cross in the 72nd minute.
Dallamora noted her team's poise and effort despite the loss against the Bears.
"We played a great game against Washington," Dallamora said. "We played probably one of our best games, [but] it didn't work out. [The ball] didn't end up in the back of the net."
The Judges hope to end their regular season on a high note Saturday at home against New York University at 1:30 p.m.
NYU is 9-7-1 overall but winless in conference play with a 0-5-1 record against UAA opponents. The Violets are coming off of a 2-1 overtime loss against WashU last Sunday at home.
