Five students from Al-Quds University, the Arab school in Israel that has a partnership with the University, engaged in a roundtable discussion with members of the Senate. Assistant Provost for Graduate Student Affairs Alwina Bennett assisted in communication between the Al-Quds and Brandeis students.
The Senate voted to charter J Street U-Brandeis, "a student-driven network of activists organizing on campuses across North America for peace and social justice in Israel, the future state of Palestine and across the Middle East."
Student Union Director of Academic Affairs Supreetha Gubbala '12, Director of Executive Affairs Sofya Bronshvayg '11 and Student Union Executive Task Force Member Danielle Wolfson '11 presented a slide show about Justice Brandeis Semesters.
Student Union President Andy Hogan '11 discussed in his Executive Board report that the presidential advisory committee met this past week to discuss outreach options for the student body to be represented on the search committee.
Hogan said that he made a presentation to faculty about student overcrowding. He showed concern, noting that the average class size last year was approximately 21.8 students and, if nothing is changed and trends continue, average class size will be close to 28 students in 2014.
Hogan pressed senators to advertise trial runs of an additional BranVan for peak times during the week. Trial runs will be provided from 5 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 10, 12, 17 and 19.
The Senate voted to table the issue of de-chartering the approximately 90 clubs who have not signed the mandatory anti-hazing forms until next week.
Senator for the Class of 2013 Jonah Cohen said that he and Senator for the Class of 2012 Nipun Marwaha are working to improve cell phone service on campus.
Senator for the Class of 2010 Michael Weil talked about a possible new kosher meal plan for Sherman. He met with Vice President for Campus Operations Mark Collins and the meal plan committee to discuss meal plan reform.
