Women's Soccer: Double overtime goal beats Judges
The women's soccer team was just over 5 minutes away from earning its third tie of the season against Bowdoin College on Thursday. However, in the 105th minute of play, Polar Bears junior defender Tiernan Cutler scored after a corner kick to give Brandeis its third overtime loss this season. The loss drops the Judges to 7-5-3 on the season after a 5-1-2 start. Brandeis also drops to 0-2-3 in extra-session games this season.
The game-winning goal came after a corner kick by Bowdoin sophomore midfielder/forward Celeste Swain. Brandeis keeper Hillary Rosenzweig '10 was able to knock the initial attempt away, but the ball went right to Polar Bears rookie forward Stacie Sammott, who tapped it to Cutler. Cutler then shot the ball into the open net for the winning goal.
"It was double overtime, so obviously by that point everyone's really tired," midfielder Mimi Theodore '12 said. "They were just quicker to the rebound and quickly put a shot off. It was just a lot of confusion, ... and they were the first ones to jump on the rebound, and they put it away," she added.
This match was the third straight game in which the Judges had given up a goal off of a corner kick. Against Emory on Oct. 18, the Eagles tied the game in the 27th minute off a header after a corner kick. On Oct. 16 against Carnegie Mellon University, the Judges gave up a game-tying goal after a deflection of the corner kick in the box.
"Over the last couple games we've gotten scored on corners, so I think we definitely need to focus on working as hard as we can to get the ball out," Theodore said. "I think that's definitely been one of our obvious problems. ... We'll get the ball initially off the corner but we don't get it out of our end, and it comes right back in, and that's what's killing us."
Both teams had plenty of scoring chances in the game, especially during regulation when the Judges had 13 shots to the Polar Bears' 12. Overall, Brandeis outshot Bowdoin 18-14 in the game.
The Judges had a chance to score in the 74th minute when midfielder Sofia Vallone '11 hit the crossbar on a shot. Not to be outdone, the Polar Bears got off four shots in the last 10 minutes of regulation, all of which were saved by Rosenzweig.
"I thought Hillary did a great job," Theodore said. "It was wet out that day so the ball was hooking everywhere, but Hillary came up with some big saves. [Bowdoin is] a good team, they got shots off. . It was just unfortunate how it ended, because she worked really hard throughout the whole game."
Brandeis had further opportunities to score in the first overtime session, when they outshot the Polar Bears 3-1. Mimi Theodore, who is the team's leading scorer this year with eight goals, had one of those shots in the 99th minute, but it sailed wide of the net. Her twin sister, midfielder/forward Ali Theodore '12, also had a shot that went wide in the second minute of overtime.
The Judges had the shot advantage in the second overtime, getting off two shots early in the period. The Polar Bears had only one shot in second overtime, but that was the game winner.
The Judges were not among the top 12 teams in the New England region in the NCAA's regional rankings released last Wednesday. Currently, Tufts University is ranked 12th, ahead of the Judges, even though Brandeis defeated Tufts 2-0 earlier this season.
The Judges also tied Springfield College, the No. 6 team in the rankings, and lost 1-0 to No. 5 Babson College.
Brandeis concludes its season with three straight University Athletic Association home games, starting this weekend. The Judges host Washington University in St. Louis Friday at 7:30 p.m. and University of Chicago Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
