Search for JBS leader ongoing
Applications for the Justice Brandeis Semester manager position are being reviewed by the committee responsible for the operations of the JBS programs, according to Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences Elaine Wong, a committee member. The committee, which includes faculty, administrators and students, has begun reviewing résumés and plans to conduct an interview process involving committee members and perhaps other members of the Brandeis community, said Wong. She said that the committee hopes to choose someone to fill the position by October.
The Brandeis employment Web site lists the responsibilities of the JBS manager, which include "managing the logistics of the program, including developing publicity, the application process, budget monitoring, logistical arrangements for students and faculty, and the implementation of the program evaluation rubric."
Dean of Arts and Sciences Adam Jaffe said that he hoped to find a JBS manager "very soon." Jaffe said that he expected the JBS manager to focus on "implementing the decisions about what we are going to do and how we are going to do it."
Wong said that the larger JBS committee would draw from its members to create a subcommittee that would include at least one student representative. That subcommittee would be tasked with reviewing proposals for JBS programs and then passing on those worth consideration on to Jaffe.
The JBS Web site states, "Each JBS program will consist of at least 12 credits (e.g., three four-credit courses, or two six-credit 'mandatory practicum' courses) but no more than 20 credits." Each JBS four-credit course will meet for 39 hours, which can include hours outside the classroom when the instructor is present.
The JBS committee began reviewing proposals for the JBS to take place in summer 2010 in early September and has set Oct. 1 as the deadline for the submission of proposals for summer 2010 programs.
The Dean's office has committed to run up to a dozen pilot programs during the upcoming summer, but Jaffe said that the long-term plan entails having JBS programs during the spring, summer and fall. He hopes that the JBS programs would eventually include up to 900 students.
Jaffe said that he was looking for "[JBS] proposals that are of interest to students and are intellectually exciting." He added that although he has effective veto power over any proposals, he doubted if he would reject a proposal that was handed on to him.
Student Union President Andy Hogan '11 said in an interview with the Justice that the Student Union has been holding meetings with faculty and students regarding the JBS, such as one held yesterday with Prof. Laura Goldin (AMST).
Hogan said that he would be present at these meeting with other members of the Student Union including Union Director of Academic Affairs Supreetha Gubbala '12.
Hogan said that he believed the meetings have "allowed both faculty and students to get a feeling for what the other wanted from these programs."
