At long last, singer Michael Jackson was laid to rest on Thursday, Sept. 3. Jackson's family and close friends arrived at Forest Lawn Cemetery at about 8:10 p.m. As Michael's three children; his sisters, Janet and LaToya; his brothers, Jermaine and Tito; and his parents, Katherine and Joe took their seats, solo piano renditions of Michael's songs began to play. Jackson's body was driven into Forest Lawn shortly before 8:30 p.m. and arrived at the burial site minutes later. As soon as the hearse arrived, the cemetery-based camera feeds shut off, ending the public's up-close, audio-assisted viewing of the proceedings. In addition to Michael's family, a number of celebrities attended the burial, including Macaulay Culkin; Stevie Wonder; Michael's ex-wife, Lisa Marie Presley; Corey Feldman; Elizabeth Taylor; Gladys Knight; and Reverend Al Sharpton. Without audio, it was impossible to hear the details of the service, but Sharpton Tweeted briefly during the ceremony: "I just spoke at the conclusion of tributes," he wrote "Gladys Knight sang her heart out. Now we prepare to lay him to rest."

The moving Thursday evening service was overshadowed, in a way, by an interview given by Dr. Jack Kevorkian on Wednesday regarding Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician targeted in the manslaughter investigation into Michael's death. Even though Jackson's death has been ruled a homicide, Kevorkian, 81, told Fox News' Neil Cavuto Wednesday that Murray did not commit murder by providing Jackson with lethal amounts of the anesthetic propofol.

"I don't think he was malicious," Kevorkian said. "Murder is defined by forethought. . Did the doctor have forethought? I doubt it. . The patient got what he wanted. He is the one who said yes or no to a drug."

Despite the renewed controversy over the singer's death, Michael's funeral remained a quiet, moving affair. CNN reported that Knight sang the Lord's Prayer, Presley was extremely emotional when the casket was brought in from the hearse and that Taylor's wheelchair had to be lifted up a series of steps after the various tributes when attendees entered the mausoleum.

The ceremony lasted about an hour and 15 minutes. "Michael Jackson has been laid to rest," Sharpton tweeted around 9:45 p.m.
