Swimming and diving teams take first sweep of season
The swimming teams both defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute last Saturday. For the men's swimming and diving team, it was the first victory in a dual meet this season. The win was the women's squad's second in a row.The men's team, which won by a score of 157-137, is now 1-2 in dual meets this season, while the women's squad climbed to 2-1 with the 148-137 victory over WPI.
A first-place finish in the last event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, clinched the win for the men's side. The relay team, comprised of Justin Wellins '10, Jesse Hershman '10, captain Michael Rubin '09 and Bobby Morse '09, finished two seconds before WPI with a time of 3 minutes, 20.71 seconds.
"It's a good feeling to win [the meet] when you know you're close in the end," Wellins said.
Individually, James Liu '10 and Marc Eder '12 both captured multiple events for the Judges. Liu won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events in 22.24 and 48.22 seconds, respectively, and also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly, while Eder won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events.
Morse and Alex Cemaj '10 also took first place in an individual event. Morse won the 200-yard freestyle, while Cemaj took the 1,000-yard freestyle race.
Many of the women's team's swimmers competed in events in which they don't normally swim.
Angela Chui '12 led the Judges with wins in three individual races, including the 50-yard freestyle, which she completed in 26.01 seconds, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke.
"I haven't swam those events in a pretty long time, so it felt kind of weird to swim [those events], but I was pretty happy with my performance," Chui said.
Julia Derk '12, who placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley, and captain Leah Lipka '09, who captured both backstroke events, each won two individual races.
"We've been working on our walls a lot in practice, so I think my turns are improving," Lipka said.
Hollis Viray '10 and Rachel Sawicki '10 rounded out the first-place finishes for the Judges, who also won two relay races.
Both teams will participate in the Alumni Meet Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at home.
