WSOCCER: Brandeis plays in third straight overtime game, loses to Clark University
Playing in its third straight overtime game last Saturday against Clark University, the women's soccer team hoped to end its two-game winless streak after opening the season with four straight wins. But in just the second minute of that overtime period, Clark sophomore midfielder Allison Kennelly hit a loose ball into the back of the net to give Clark a 1-0 win. The loss dropped the Judges to 4-2-1, including a 2-2 tie at Bridgewater State College last Wednesday. They have not won a contest since Sept. 10, having scored only three goals in that span despite outshooting their opponents in all three games.
"I know we dominated the whole second half," coach Denise Dallamora said. "We made an error, and we didn't score. So the combination of the two led to a loss."
According to goalkeeper Hillary Rosenzweig '10, the goal came as a result of a miscommunication between herself and one of the central defenders over who was going to get the ball.
"It was a really unfortunate thing, because we were playing well, but those things happen," Rosenzweig said. "We just have to work on it."
The Judges had two shots earlier in the overtime period but failed to score. Forward Tiffany Pacheco '11 sent a shot wide in the 91st minute, and just over 20 seconds later, midfielder Alanna Torre '12 had a shot saved by junior goalie Joanna Clark.
"That's just something that we need to work on as a team-finishing the goal," midfielder Ellie Einhorn '11 said. "Other than that we moved the ball around really well."
The Judges committed 14 fouls against Clark, including 11 in the second half, while the Cougars only had six. The Judges also were without rookie forward Izabella Miranda '12, who has three goals and three assists this season but sat out on Saturday with a back injury.
The Judges played their second straight overtime game last Wednesday, tying Bridgewater State College 2-2. After falling behind 1-0, Brandeis knotted the game in the 16th minute when Torre hit a corner kick that Einhorn headed into the net. The Judges then took the lead in the 39th minute when Miranda scored her third goal of the season off an assist by forward Melissa Gorenkoff '10.
But Bridgewater State evened the score in the 84th minute when junior forward Kristina McSharry took a long pass from senior forward Kaitlin Lamothe, who hit a shot just inside the left post.
Torre said the grass field may have been a contributing factor in the loss.
"I think that was our first game on grass, and it was just really thick, and there were weeds everywhere and holes, and it was just a very bumpy surface," Torre said. "We have been playing on turf all year, so I don't think we were used to it. It was much slower, and the ball would take weird bounces. It was difficult."
Defensively, the Judges have surrendered five goals during the winless streak after not allowing a goal in the first four games of the season.
"I think we need to talk more, work as a team," Torre said. "We haven't been working as a team as much on the field and we haven't been working for each other and working off of each other."
Dallamora said she is searching for a way to jumpstart another winning streak.
"I'm not sure what we are going to do," Dallamora said last Sunday. "We've got to work harder, that's all."
The Judges hope to rebound tomorrow at Smith College at 4:30 p.m.
