Alumni plan to build new seats
Two soccer alumni are spearheading a campaign to add bleachers behind the home and away benches of Gordon Field, Director of Athletics Sheryl Sousa '90 said during her opening remarks at the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony last Sunday."[The addition of bleachers] would give our teams the home field advantage they truly deserve," Sousa said. "I think it would help in terms of recruiting, and [it would] give more of a stadium feel to the facility," Sousa told the Justice after the ceremony.
Brad Akers '95 and Mike Gerstein '96 are leading the effort among soccer and track alumni and have made initial donations for the project, Sousa said. The goal is to raise $250,000, she said.
The bleachers, with seating for about 500 people, would be placed on the hill behind the home and away teams' benches, according to Sousa.
Sousa said a completion date for the project has not been determined and is largely dependent on how quickly funds can be raised.
Gordon Field, home to the soccer and track teams, received new synthetic turf to replace the old natural grass surface before the 2005 fall season. The track was repaved in the spring of 2006.
Despite these improvements, there are only a few rows of bleachers for spectators, so the majority of people that attended soccer games have stood along the fence surrounding the track.
