Upon completing the 400-yard individual medley event during the women's swimming and diving team's match against Clark University last Wednesday, Hollis Viray '10 was unaware of the magnitude of her first-place finish. A text message from a teammate later that night provided the news: Her time of four minutes, 44.91 seconds was a new school record."It feels good to know that I'm one of the fastest swimmers that's come through Brandeis in its history," Viray said. "But honestly, there's not that much significance to it because I'd much rather do well in competition and see where I place."

Viray's win, which came just the second time she swam the event on the collegiate level, helped propel the Judges' to a 137-100 win, moving their record to 2-6 this season. The men's team was also successful at Clark, winning 121-71 to improve to 4-3 on the season.

Sharon Makowsky '06, the owner of six other Brandeis swimming records, previously held the school record with a time of 4:44.94, a mark she set in her senior season.

Viray's record is even more impressive considering it came minutes after she won the 100-yard freestlye event by more than 30 seconds over Clark junior Kayleigh Lagasse.

"I didn't have any expectations going into it," Viray said. "I was already a little tired, so my main focus was not to take it out too fast, but try to hold back a little so I could have energy to finish the race strong."

Other Judges' victories came from Siobhan Lyons '10, who won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:20.90, Rachel Nadas '09, who took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:43.21, and Dana Simms '11, who captured the 100-yard freestyle in 58.61 seconds.

"Part of the duel meet season is getting athletes to learn to race properly so by the time we get to championship meets they have that skill and can then swim emotionally," coach James Zotz said.

"We spend a lot of time on the strategy of swimming different races, and we had a lot of really good races from a lot of our woman swimmers in this meet."

Rachel Sawicki '10 continued her success as well, as she touched the wall just in front of teammate Charlotte Rea '08 to win the 50-yard freestyle event in 26.42 seconds.

Despite losing by just one-hundredth of a second in the 50-yard freestyle, Rea provided consistent results in diving. She won the one-meter event with a score of 238.20 and the three-meter event with a score of 241.25.

After recording diving scores that put her in position to qualify for the NCAA championships against Wheaton College Jan. 17, Rea said building on that success was a challenge this week.

"There's definitely some extra pressure to live up to what you've done in the past," she said.

The men's team dominated against Clark, yielding just the two diving events, in which Brandeis did not have any divers.

The Judges took all 11 swimming events, including the 200-yard breaststroke, won by James Liu '10 with a time of 2:23.42.

Liu also won the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:49.18, but was more impressed with his performance in the 200-yard breaststroke because it was the first time he competed in that event as a collegiate.

"I was surprised that I was able to do that well," Liu said. "[Zotz] put me in just to see how I would do. Breaststroke is the weakest out of all my strokes and I had been messing around with it throughout the year and trying to improve it in practice so it felt really good to get the win."

Zach Rubenstein '11 was the other multiple-race winner for the Judges, as he took the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:18.65 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.05.

"[Rubenstein] had a real good meet; he was really consistent," Zotz said. "He was my recommendation for University Athletic Association athlete of the week on the men's side."

Both teams face Worcester Polytechnic Institute Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in their final meet before the University Athletic Association championships.
