ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ali Sax '09
At the Bowdoin College Invitational last Saturday, Ali Sax '09 played a role in three different event victories. She swept the long jump and triple jump events, helped the 4-by-200-meter relay team win by over 13 full seconds and competed in the 55-meter hurdles event, all with little rest due to the proximity of the events' placements.
But when asked about her performance considering the circumstances, Sax was very subdued.
"It's the beginning of the season, so there's definitely room for improvement," she said.
Sax's three wins were not enough to carry the women's indoor track team to victory last Saturday, but the Judges, who fell four points shy of host Bowdoin College, wouldn't have come close without her contributions, which accounted for 25 of the team's 129 points.
Sax was able to perform strongly even with little rest between events. This was not the first time she competed in four spots at a meet, but it was the first time that her four events were staggered together. Sax estimates she competed in the triple jump, 4-by-200-meter relay and hurdles in a span of "30 to 45 minutes," and got just a five-minute break between the hurdles and the long jump event.
"I just had to ignore [the fatigue]," Sax said.
"I just had to think that I was fine, and everything would be fine. I had to think, 'I'm tired, but I'm not going to let it affect me.'"
Sax also credited constant conversations with coach Mark Reytblat during the course of the meet in helping her overcome her fatigue.
"[Reytblat] was telling me, 'You're tired, it's okay,' and that got me to understand that I was tired, and [the things] I had to do to do well.
