DanceFest: Non-stop motion
DanceFest fires up a full house
If there was any indication of DanceFest's quality Thursday night, it was the steady stream of students flowing into Levin Ballroom right up until the lights went down. Though last year's DanceFest suffered from criminally sparse attendance, the 2007 edition saw students taking it upon themselves to extend the rows of seats almost to the walls of the room. Despite some last-minute cancellations and some hasty improvisation (read: stalling) courtesy of Adagio member Jen Desrochers '08, DanceFest was a short but sweet foray into the world of fluid movement. On display for the evening was a wide range of dance styles from different campus groups, as well as a particularly invigorating performance from the Babson College Dance Team. The Adagio Dance Company performed several of the evening's pieces, which ran the gamut from hip-hop ("Roll Call") to more traditional styles ("Revealer"). Traditional Israeli dance group B'yachad also put up an admirable performance, creating a shimmering, well-synchronized clamor with their sequined pants. Yet this paled in comparison to the lock-step clicks of tap-dancing group Hooked on Tap.
Hip-hop dance troupe HIPnosis, a recent induction into the campus group canon, brought all of its many members on stage for a peppy number that managed to incorporate parts of the famed "Soulja Boy" routine into its choreography. Yet undoubtedly, the evening's boiling point was reached by the Babson College Dance Team, who, flaunting an expertly rehearsed and creative hip-hop routine, got most of Levin Ballroom hooting and hollering. The groups even raised a few eyebrows with some particularly erotic moves.
At this point, it's safe to declare DanceFest '07 a complete success. With multiple groups participating and a diverse palette of styles, it's likely that no audience member was left unsatisfied.
