WSOCCER: A failed rally attempt
After the women's soccer team rallied quickly to force a 1-1 tie against the University of Chicago Friday, coach Denise Dallamora declared that her squad was a "comeback team." But when the Judges were faced with a similar situation in Sunday's game against No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis, Dallamora wasn't able to sing the same tune. The Judges surrendered a goal in the 58th minute Sunday and were unable to stage another comeback, falling 1-0 to the Bears. The loss, combined with Friday's draw, moved Brandeis to 7-4-2 on the season and 1-1-2 against University Athletic Association opponents.
"[WashU's] a little bit quicker than us, especially in the middle," Dallamora said. "They hold the ball better than us and have a really solid first touch, they won more [balls in the air], and as a result, we didn't win."
The Judges' defense held the Bears scoreless in the first half before junior midfielder Caitlin Malone gave WashU the lead. She stole the ball from the Brandeis defense in the 58th minute, creating a scramble in front of the goal. Sophomore midfielder Elyse Hanly recovered the ball and kicked it into the right side of the net past goalie Hillary Rosenzweig '10.
"We did not defend well [on that play]," Dallamora said. "We weren't marked very well, and it deflected around. Nobody owned that ball, and it went in."
The Judges were outshot 23-6 during the game, but did have several scoring opportunities in the first half. In the sixth minute, forward Melissa Gorenkoff '10 took a shot on the left side of the goal, but WashU senior goalie Carrie Sear collected for the first of her five saves.
In the 19th minute, substitute forward Kelly Cozzens '11 took a pass from Gorenkoff and fired a shot toward the right side of the net, but Sear made a diving save.
"[The Judges] were dangerous a few times on counterattacks, but I thought we did a pretty good job to get numbers back and prevent them from getting a good look at goal," WashU coach Wendy Dillinger said.
The Bears turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting Brandeis 13-2. Three of those shots came within the first nine minutes of the period. Rosenzweig withstood the initial onslaught, kicking aside the third of those shots off a WashU corner kick.
Yet Rosenzweig wasn't as lucky in the 58th minute, when she couldn't prevent Hanly from scoring the game-winning goal.
"It was basically two against one, and they got the last shot," rookie defender Taryn Martiniello '11 said.
The Judges had one more opportunity to score in the 84th minute. Gorenkoff, running down the side of the field, sent a cross pass to Pacheco, but Sears headed her shot away.
"We had trouble connecting," captain midfielder Sarah Jasak '08 said. "We got passes to our forwards, and then we had trouble with the final pass in order to score."
Both teams scored early in the Judges' draw against Chicago Friday. The Maroons got on the board in the 10th minute when sophomore midfielder Claire Gill headed a corner kick from senior defender Amanda Catalano into the right side of the goal.
Brandeis responded just over three minutes later in the 13th minute, when Jasak recovered a Chicago clearance attempt and scored to tie the game at one. That proved to be the Judges' only goal in the game.
Chicago outshot the Judges 17-10 and had a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks, but Rosenzweig kept them in the game with seven saves, including four during a 14-minute second-half stretch.
"[Rosenzweig] was the player of the game," Dallamora said. "She played awesome."
The Judges next play when they travel to Bowdoin College Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in their first of four consecutive road games.
