Students may be able to watch television as they walk to class, if a new plan proposed by Union President Alison Schwartzbaum '08 is approved.Under the proposal, two 42-inch flatscreen televisions would be placed on the Rabb steps, in the Usdan Student Center and in the Shapiro Campus Center and would air advertisements for campus activities through ChyTV, a video graphics display, Schwartzbaum said.

"This is an opportunity for clubs and other campus organizations to figure out interesting ways to publicize with this new marketing tool," Schwartzbaum said. During the recent club renewal process, clubs told the Club Support Committee that they need more resources to advertise effectively.

Schwartzbaum said she and administrators began discussing this plan last year.

Chief of Operations Peter French wrote in an e-mail to the Justice that over the next few weeks he will consider the feasibility and costs of the proposal.

Advertising would be free for clubs and University departments to publicize their programs, Schwartzbaum said. Groups would likely create their advertisements and submit them in the same way they submit announcements to the my.brandeis system.

Schwartzbaum said ads would be presented in the same way as CNN's "Headline News," possibly consisting of a live TV feed, perhaps from BTV: 65, a left-hand sidebar with a virtual flyer or other information and a bottom scroll with more information, possibly from the Student Union.

The exact location of the TVs on the Rabb steps has yet to be determined, but one consideration in determining its placement will be the amount of time a person takes to process the information on the screen.

It's unclear who would be responsible for the TVs' upkeep and funding, but the Union could have that responsibility, Schwartzbaum said.
