Union official's performance questioned
Finance board member Jordan Rothman '09 said the other six members of the Board, which distributes funds to chartered groups, have requested his resignation and have hinted they may begin impeachment proceedings.Impeachment would require the approval of two-thirds of the Union Senate. Then, the Union Judiciary would decide if Rothman had breached any constitutional duties.
Rothman who was elected last spring is a member of seventeen clubs and an officer in nine of them. He said he feels other F-board members think his active involvement in so many groups provide him with too many conflicts of interest to sit on the board.
But the other six F-board members said in a joint statement that they do not oppose Rothman's active participation in so many clubs, as long as his activities do not force him to miss meetings, which they say may compromise the fund distribution process.
The six F-board members wrote, ". he failed to accomplish basic level F-board tasks. He has been more of a distraction than an asset."
Rothman said in addition to objections over his poor attendance at meetings, the other F-board members are particularly upset over his role as the managing editor of the Hoot, to which he said they accuse him of leaking information.
Rothman said he also disputes the F-board's allegation that he had not been an effective liaison to Student Events.
All F-board members are assigned a secured group to oversee. The F-Board wrote that Rothman failed to uphold the responsibilities of a liaison, such as developing an in-depth understanding of the group.
Director of Student Events Sarah Blaker '07 disagreed with that assessment.
"He's been extremely devoted to Student Events. He's attended a few of our meetings and tried to stay involved and he's certainly been helpful," Blaker said.
The F-board statement said that "[Jordan] has also been unable to question/challenge anything on their budget," unlike other F-boarders.
Rothman said F-board members suggested to him in meetings that he resign.
The tension between Rothman and the other panel members escalated in October when confidential Student Union memos were leaked to The Hoot, Rothman said.
He declined to disclose the details of those memos, but said the F-board blamed him for the leaks because of his position as a Hoot editor and previous critical statements in the Hoot of the F-board's operation.
Rothman alleged an executive officer from the Student Union called the Hoot's editor to tell them to "fire" him. The Union's director of communications, Brian Paternostro '07 denied the charge in an e-mail to the Justice.
Rothman said the tension between his F-board peers and him peaked in late November when the Hoot received an e-mail sent from an F-board member to the private F-board listserv containing comments that personally attacked a Hoot reporter.
Rothman said such behavior is common for F-boarders on their listserv and at meetings. "[F-boarders] curse at people; they make fun of people. They mention the attractiveness of people who come before us. They're really unprofessional.
