Einstein Bros. Bagels debuts
CORRECTION APPENDED (SEE BOTTOM)Returning from Winter Break, students noticed a new addition to the Shapiro Campus Center: Einstein Bros. Bagels, which replaced Java City, on Jan. 2.
The national chain, which is operated by Brandeis under a contract agreement, will offer a variety of bagel flavors and spreads, as well as different types of salads and sandwiches, Michael Newmark, director of Dining Services, said.
As at Java City, students will still be able to use points, WhoCash and meals to purchase food at Einstein Bros. Bagels. Kosher food will also be available upon request, Newmark said.
Customers and employees offered mixed reviews of the change over.
Sonja Gandert '09, who worked at Java City and now at Einstein's, said, "the coffee selection at Java City is better but the food selection at Einstein's Bagels is better."
Tamar Ariel '10 said "it took five minutes for them to make me a latte; it took a lot less time at Java City."
Newmark said that "some items [at Einstein's] are priced higher but they are also bigger sizes and portions."
He said that Einstein Bros. Bagels is the first national brand store on campus. "Many students requested Einstein's and are familiar with the concept."
"Einstein's recognizes a solid nutritional and healthy platform," Newmark said, adding students can find the bagel store's nutritional information online.
Wesley Joel '09 expressed satisfaction with the new choices: "The bread always has multigrains and tastes great with vegetables."
Also beginning this semester, The Stein will be open between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays to serve coffee and pastries. The new afternoon menu includes desserts and other specialties, according to Stein Manager Lauren Mondino.
Mondino said The Stein has added an espresso and cappuccino machine and will serve smoothies and milkshakes in the afternoon.
Mondino said the new hours will "add more options and services for the community," and said she hopes "the community takes advantage of this new concept."
Due to an editing error, it incorrectly stated that Aramark owns Einstein Bros. Bagels. The bagel chain, owned by New World Restaurant Group, is franchised to Aramark.
